The third largest French multinational investment bank and financial services company, Societe Generale (SocGen), submitted a proposal MIP6 to the DeFi platform Makerdao’s governance forum for utilizing DAI stablecoins for refinancing the concept of bond tokens. The proposal of Societe Generale aims to get DeFi’s approval to accept on-chain bond tokens issued by the bank as collateral for a stablecoin DAI loan.

The French bank has applied for a $20 million loan in DAI stablecoins using bond tokens as collateral. This could be perhaps the biggest institutional adoption of DeFi. The French government recognizes both the on-chain bond tokens and DAI stablecoins. The MIP6 proposal further underlined the following points :

  • The refinancing transaction initiative combines traditional capital market activities with the thriving ecosystem.
  • The proposal would be a pilot project and aims to shape and promote an experiment under the French legal framework.

The Security Tokens Refinancing proposal was published on 1st October 2021 on behalf of French bank’s subsidiary, SocGen-Forge or SG-Forge that focuses on digital assets. The initiative is in sync with the SG-Forge’s earlier innovative process and solutions according to the Forge’s officials, as reported in Bitcoin.com. SocGen has been leading in experimenting with blockchain-based assets. The covered bonds also known as OFH bonds were issued by the bank as security tokens on the Ethereum blockchain in 2019 itself. The covered-bond tokens for which the bank has submitted proposals to Makerdao were issued in 2020 on Ethereum blockchain, at a fixed rate of 0 percent, having maturity in 2025. These bonds have AAA rating under Moody, leading American financial services provider, and Fitch, leading international credit rating agency. Covered bonds are derivative instruments like mortgage-backed or asset-backed securities. They are a package of loans that are first issued by banks and then resold to financial institutions.

Why US debt ceiling debate is giving jitters to financial markets, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

The US economy is passing through a tricky phase. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen testified before the Senate Committee on Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs that the US government would run out of cash by October 18, 2021. She also laid down the disastrous impact on the US economy should the Congress fail to pass the bill to fund the government and raise the country’s debt ceiling limit.

Let’s try to understand the whole scenario. When the expenditure of the government exceeds its revenue, it borrows money to cover the difference. In the usual practice, governments borrow money by issuing treasury securities. To bring in fiscal responsibility, most of the countries put a limit on the amount of money that the government could borrow. Similarly, in the US, the debt ceiling was first enacted in 1917. And in 1939, an aggregate limit was placed on the government debt. The debt ceiling is thus a legal limit on the amount of money that the government can borrow. Currently, in the US, it is capped at around $28.5 trillion.

In the present scenario, if the government hit/not raise the debt ceiling limit, it could lead to a delay/default on its obligations. The US government would be forced to default on many of its obligations, including the social security payments. Though the US economy has been strongly recovering, the Covid Delta variant has slowed down the recovery progress. And the consumer confidence index has even hit a seventh month low in August.

A default in social security payments/salaries would negatively impact consumption expenditure, as the beneficiaries would cut down their spending or delay the payment for rent/utilities. In such a scenario, a default, or a threat of one can have a larger negative impact on the domestic economy.

More importantly, any default on the interest payment (which would be avoided) on the treasury securities could create a turmoil in the financial sector. Such a development could lead to a fall in the prices of treasury securities as there will be lesser demand for it. This, in turn, could push up yields, resulting in a higher borrowing cost across the economy. A higher borrowing cost could pull down the overall investment and consumption in the economy.

The ongoing debate on the debt ceiling limit along with the risk of a higher inflation has pushed the US 10-year treasury yield upwards, reaching 1.52 per cent (as of 30 September 2021). Even during 2011 and 2013, when the debate on the debt ceiling limit was happening, treasury yields had seen a similar spike.

The nervousness that is visible in stock markets across the globe could be partly explained by the current impasse. The popular phrase “When the US sneezes, world catches cold” still holds. Though the chance of a default by the US government is slim, a prolonged impasse can have serious implication on not just the US economy, but across the globe. And this occurring at a time when the global economy is recovering from one of the worst crises can indeed have painful implications.

The crypto market has been correcting since the last few months and now all eyes are on what Bitcoin is going to do next. $40,000 was Bitcoin’s strongest local support, and last week we saw a positive move from $40,000 to $48,000.
Considering $50,000 as Bitcoin’s first local resistance, this move can be seen as a test move. Major resistance is not very far, and north of $52,000 is all it needs to break into a new trend.

This volatility in the market is good because it brings in some action; at the same time, support and resistance are tested multiple times.

Usually we see such behaviour towards the beginning of any big move. This is the time where short-term traders stay away and long time traders monitor the market closely for confirmation.

From a crypto market point of view, the current phase looks like a good consolidation period and hopefully, we’re coming to the end of consolidation.

As for the next movement, it’s going to be very difficult to say. It’s because when the stock market is also correcting from an all-time high and if there is a significant correction in the stock market, we could see that effect in the crypto market as well.

This would probably decide the next big move for Bitcoin and altcoins. However, it is time for traders to be patient. In the short-term, we could also see a few short positions being open.

However, from a risk-reward perspective, it does not seem to be a favourable time to trade. If you are a long-term investor, it’s definitely a good idea to dollar-cost-average your investments and keep buying the dip.

The month of October should be interesting for the market. Stay safe and play safe.

BSE ready with technology for launching electronic gold receipts, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

New Delhi: Leading stock exchange BSE is ready with its technology to introduce electronic gold receipts (EGRs) on its platform, which will help in creating uniform price structure of the yellow metal across the country, its chief business officer Sameer Patil said on Sunday. The exchange will take the required internal approvals and apply to markets regulator Sebi for the launch of the new class of security on its platform, he added.

This comes after the Sebi board on Tuesday cleared a proposal for gold exchange, wherein the yellow metal will be traded in the form of EGRs and will help in having a transparent domestic spot price discovery mechanism.

Currently, India allows trading only in gold derivatives and Gold ETFs, unlike several other countries which have spot exchanges for physical trade in gold.

The instruments representing gold will be called Electronic Gold Receipts (EGRs) and it will be notified as securities.

EGRs will have trading, clearing and settlement features akin to other securities that are currently available in India.

“BSE, which is well known for its technological prowess, has been the main proponent of creating a transparent and efficient spot market for gold as it is very important commodity for Indian consumers,” Patil told PTI.

He, further, said the exchange was preparing the technology for very long in this market and was awaiting for the in-principle approval for the same to take it further.

The exchange had made several presentations to government and regulators on how the process will work. How the participants of various types including banks, vaults, wholesaler, retailer, importers, exporters etc will participate in this ecosystem.

According to Patil, like shares, these EGRs will be held in demat form and can be converted into physical gold when needed.

To enable trading in physical gold, EGRs (backed by physical gold) will be traded and settled on stock exchanges.

Patil said that the entire trading will be done in three tranches that include conversion from physical gold to EGRs, trading of EGRs and again conversion of EGR back to physical gold.

To begin with, BSE may plan to launch EGR of 1 kg and 100 gm denominations and the same can be converted to physical gold. To attract retail investors, EGR with smaller denominations of 50 gm, 10 gm and 5 gm will also be launched in a phased manner.

The source of supply of the physical gold to be converted into EGR will be the fresh deposit of gold, coming into the vaults, either through imports or through stock exchanges accredited domestic refineries.

A client can also convert physical gold to EGR by depositing physical gold at the designated delivery centre. Exchanges will empanel Vault Service Providers (VSPs) based on guidelines prescribed by Sebi.

Similarly, clients can redeem EGR’s back to physical gold, and the process is complete. An interface will be developed between the vault managers (of physical gold), depositories (that hold EGRs in demat) and stock exchanges and clearing corporations that clear the trade.

The move is expected to reduce the existing market inefficiencies that exist in bullion trade and may act as a bridge in integrating spot gold trade with derivatives markets and create a transparent platform for bullion trading.

In addition, a single point trading for both spot and derivatives would provide scale, liquidity and better pricing for all market participants by bringing down cost and cycle time significantly.

Moreover, trading in EGRs will contribute to the existing programs for gold monetization such as Gold Monetization Scheme (GMS), Gold Bonds and Gold Deposits.

In union budget 2021-22, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced setting of a gold spot exchange and Sebi will be the designated regulator for the proposed gold exchanges.

Soma Sankara Prasad likely to be next UCO Bank MD, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

New Delhi, The government is considering appointing Soma Sankara Prasad, the deputy managing director of State Bank of India, as managing director of Kolkata-based UCO Bank. The Banks Board Bureau (BBB) has suggested the name of UCO Bank Managing Director Atul Kumar Goel for heading Punjab National Bank as MD. The managing director position of PNB will fall vacant after the superannuation of S S Mallikarjuna Rao in January.

According to sources, since Prasad was in the reserve list when the interview for appointment for managing director of Indian Bank took place earlier this year, he has been recommended to head UCO Bank subject to various clearances including vigilance.

The final view in this regard would be taken by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) headed by the Prime Minister, sources said.

The BBB, the headhunter for state-owned banks and financial institutions, in May had conducted interviews for the position of MD of Indian Bank. Post interview, Shanti Lal Jain was recommended for the post while Prasad was the candidate on the reserve list.

Last month, the Reserve Bank removed UCO Bank from its Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) Framework following improvement in various parameters and a written commitment that the state-owned lender will comply with the minimum capital norms.

The lender also apprised the RBI of the structural and systemic improvements that it has put in place, which would help the bank in continuing to meet the financial commitments. The public sector bank plunged under PCA in May 2017.

PCA is triggered when banks breach certain regulatory requirements such as return on asset, minimum capital and quantum of the non-performing asset.

The restrictions disable banks in several ways to lend freely and force them to operate under a restrictive environment that turns out to be a hurdle to growth.

UCO Bank had posted over a four-fold jump in its net profit to Rs 101.81 crore for the first quarter of the fiscal ended June 30, as bad loans fell significantly.

The lender trimmed its gross non-performing assets (NPAs or bad loans) significantly to 9.37 per cent of the gross advances as of June 30, 2021, as against 14.38 per cent at June-end 2020.

The net NPAs were down at 3.85 per cent (Rs 4,387.25 crore) from 4.95 per cent (Rs 5,138.18 crore). PTI DP ANZ MR

‘Transitory Inflation’ Leading To A Bullish Gold Market, What Should You Do?

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Investment

oi-Kuntala Sarkar

|

Two major fundamentals of gold investment are – diversifying the risk in the investment portfolio and keeping the asset as a hedge against inflation. The present global economic status could not be more appropriate on these 2 grounds as the USA is dealing with a ‘transitory inflation’, and volatile equity and bond yields. Present inflation is being identified as ‘transitory’ because it is an impact of the post-pandemic period, according to experts. With strict monetary policy by the US Federal Reserve, and faster manufacturing growth and employment opportunity, inflation might be in control in the next year. On the other hand, the equity market and treasury yields are rising and fetching around 1.52%, with Fed’s strong confidence in the economy. But as the equity market can go volatile again, any time, one investor must be ready for it. Fitch Ratings thinks US AAA sovereign credit rating could be under pressure if the Fed does not address the debt ceiling issue soon. In that case, gold can emerge as a savior again.

'Transitory Inflation' Leading To A Bullish Gold Market, What Should You Do?

A Kitco Gold survey recently stated the participants’ views, – on the Wall Street, gold is going 50% bullish and 29% bearish, and 21% at a neutral position, while on the Main Street gold market is going 48% bullish and 38% bearish, and 13% at a neutral position. The survey also says, “Bullishness among retail investors has picked up.” The last traded spot gold price was $1762/oz, and Comex December futures stayed around $1758 and more. This bullish trend is expected to strengthen in October, waiting for Fed’s comment on their monetary policy in the November meeting. Commenting on this bullish trend of gold and inflation, Ole Hansen, Head of Commodity Strategy, Saxo Bank told Kitco, “Gold is slowly disconnecting from dollar and yield strength as the inflation story becomes anything but transitory.”

Concerns of traders and investors

Asset trading and investing are treated differently. On gold, platinum, and silver trading and investing, some experts think, “When they are traded, you use a method and a plan to enter and exit with strict rules on both. When you invest, you also have a set of rules but not as stringent.” Keeping this in mind, one investor must keep faith in gold for the long term. In early October, gold rates are gaining promisingly, but any scale of Fed tapering will pull down the prices later this year. Experts are more bearish about 2022’s gold rate anticipations. So, what should the investors do? Should they stop buying the asset? Rather the opposite. They can invest in the asset class keeping the long haul portfolio in mind. Because, even if the tapering happens from December, this year or early 2020, the Fed will keep buying government-backed bonds, only the pace will be slower.

Traders, on the other hand, can be more stringent to fix their entry-exit strategies, as the gold prices will impact them more in the short-term period. On this note, we can derive Christopher Vecchio, Senior Market Strategist, DailyFX.com comment as he said, “I would expect gold to rally as this crisis builds, but we have been here before, and when these issues are resolved, prices could fall like a brink.” So, traders should be more strict and cautious about that.

Indian investors should not worry about the current bullish or bearish sentiment a lot. India is the second-largest importer of gold, and domestic gold consumption is only rising with time. RBI, the Indian central bank is also keeping faith in the asset class and increasing gold reserve. Hence, walking on the same line of thoughts will help them to understand India’s policy on the asset class, which is bullish at present.

China’s hidden debt, a major problem for borrowers, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Different countries owe at least USD 385 billion amount of debt to China which has slipped through scrutiny of international lenders such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The “hidden debt” is due to an increasing number of deals struck not directly between governments through central banks but through often opaque arrangements with a range of financing institutions, hence “the debt burdens were kept off the public balance sheets,” Radio Free Asia reported citing a four-year study by AidData.

“Chinese debt burdens are substantially larger than research institutions, credit rating agencies, or intergovernmental organizations with surveillance responsibilities previously understood,” the study said.

The study also added that nearly 70 per cent of China’s overseas lending “is now directed to state-owned companies, state-owned banks, special purpose vehicles, joint ventures, and private sector institutions in recipient countries” rather than sovereign borrowers which are central government institutions, Radio Free Asia reported.

Meanwhile, China is also using confidentiality clauses barring borrowers from revealing terms and conditions of the engagement or even the existence of the debt itself.

International Forum for Right and Security (IFFRAS), reported that recent joint research by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Kiel Institute for the World Economy and the Centre for Global Development & Aid Data concluded that it uses these contracts to debt-trap the borrowing nations.
