New Delhi: Major cryptocurrencies bled on Monday, thanks to a strong inflow of negative updates across the globe. Investors turned cautious over another meltdown in the crypto cart.

Barring stablecoins, eight out of top 10 cryptocurrencies were trading lower at 9.30 hours IST. Solana tanked as much as 12 per cent, whereas Cardano and XRP gave up over 8 per cent each.

The global crypto market cap tanked up to 6 per cent to $2.02 trillion compared to the last day. However, the total crypto market volume gained as much as 4 per cent to $91.91 billion.

“The past 24 hours were relatively quiet for the cryptocurrency market. As institutional investors become more active progressing into the new week, we would likely witness more volatility. Crypto bluechips faced minor profit booking over the weekend,” said Edul Patel, CEO and Co-founder of Mudrex.

In the meantime, US officials are examining possible insider trading and market manipulation at Binance, Bloomberg News reported, potentially adding more heat to the cryptocurrency exchange that has become a target of regulatory scrutiny in many countries.

New Delhi: Major cryptocurrencies were bleeding on Tuesday. All the top 100 digital tokens were trading in the red at 9.30 hours IST, highlighting the gloom in the crypto market. Binance Coin, Ripple, Ethereum, Dogecoin, Polkadot tanked 8-13 per cent.

The global crypto market cap plunged to $1.19 trillion, a 7.48 per cent decrease over the last day. The total crypto market volume over the last 24 hours was $62.12 billion, increased by 27.76 per cent.

The retreat comes amid a broader risk-off environment that’s also seen US equities fall due to fears of slowing growth and a relentless spread of the delta variant of Covid.

The Turkish Ministry of Treasury and Finance, announced that a draft bill to create a legal framework for crypto assets is ready for discussion. This comes shortly after El Salvador legalised Bitcoin, and Paraguay has also shown a keen interest in doing so.

Deputy Minister Sakir Ercan Gül announced that the crypto bill would be presented to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, at the start of the next legislative year, which is October 2021.

Zebpay Trade Desk said that the hope of a friendly approach to regulation is high, as doing so would make the country an attractive investment source for leading crypto exchanges across the globe.

“Bitcoin has taken a beating this week, as it fell below $31,000 on Monday evening,” it added. “The most likely general explanation is of the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust, which on Sunday saw a 16,000-BTC unlocking event, which a day later negatively impacted the market.”

The central bank of Turkey had previously banned the use of cryptocurrencies as a means of exchange, and prevented banks from providing deposit and withdrawal services to crypto exchanges. The new legal framework is also likely to put several protective measures, such as security clearance and collateralizing in place.

Polygon Network (MATIC) has appreciated more than 100x from the start of the year to its new all-time high (ATH of $2.7). MATIC has been in the accumulation phase for months. After breaking out, it zoomed past previous highs in longer time frames and seemed unstoppable until the bearish trend on Bitcoin (BTC) started in May.

On shorter time frames, MATIC has been forming a descending channel, a temporary bearish pattern while the long-term picture remains bullish. MATIC enjoys a strong support zone. It has closed below the EMA20 while the RSI indicator is in the oversold territory, meaning that there are no indicators for a breakout from the channel for now.

Once BTC starts to regain lost momentum, MATIC will hopefully start its uptrend towards its ATH. MATIC is in a consolidation phase after an aggressive pump, and therefore it could be another buying opportunity for investors who missed out on the window earlier.

Major Levels:
Support: $0.7, $0.61, $0.55

Bitcoin’s year so far, BFSI News, ET BFSI

LONDON: If you’re a bitcoin investor, your nerves may have taken quite a pounding in 2021.

The cryptocurrency‘s journey towards the investment and commercial mainstream has gathered pace, with major financial firms and companies embracing the emerging asset.

Such interest helped push it to a record high just shy of $65,000 in April. Yet in typically capricious fashion, it has since slumped by almost half.

At the halfway point of the year, the original and biggest cryptocurrency is up around 20% year-to-date. Here are some charts that tell the story of bitcoin’s year so far.

1/STILL VOLATILE
Wild price swings have been a defining feature of bitcoin throughout its near 13-year life. The first half of 2021 has been no different, despite hopes that greater liquidity in markets and stronger infrastructure would dampen swings.

Bitcoin more than doubled from the start of the year to its all-time high of $64,895 hit in mid-April, before slumping by over half in just five weeks as regulators across the world – especially China – cracked down on cryptocurrencies.

In May alone bitcoin lost 35%, in its worst month since 2018. Last week it fell under $30,000 for the first time since January, briefly wiping out its year-to-date gains.

Many larger investors also left the bitcoin market after prices spiked in the first quarter, with some shifting to gold, according to JP Morgan analyst Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou.

“What we found out in the second quarter was that actually demand for bitcoin is price sensitive,” he said. “Some institutional investors started getting out of bitcoin in April … they thought bitcoin prices were too high relative to gold.”

2/BITCOINS OR ALTCOINS?
Bitcoin has attracted the lion’s share of the headlines so far this year. Yet many of its smaller digital currency rivals – known as the altcoins – have posted bigger gains.

Ether, the second-largest cryptocurrency, has nearly trebled so far this year, bolstered by a surge in the so-called decentralised finance sector. “DeFi” often uses its underlying blockchain technology to offer financial services without traditional middlemen such as banks.

Signs that the ethereum blockchain is gaining traction with mainstream financial firms has also fuelled gains.

XRP, the seventh-largest coin, has gained a similar amount. Other once-obscure coins such as dogecoin, started in 2013 as a joke, have also far outpaced bitcoin, with investors drawn to the prospect of quick gains. Dogecoin is up over 5,000% so far this year.

3/OUTPACED BY MEME STOCKS
Retail investors have embraced bitcoin this year, attracted by narratives that it can act as a hedge against inflation and as a future payment method.

Also driving gains has been a perception that it is a vehicle for quick gains – a perceived quality shared by another 2021 financial market phenomenon: “meme” stocks, whose value is propelled by social-media buzz.

GameStop Corp and AMC Entertainment Holdings , two of the leading meme stocks, soared in the first quarter along with bitcoin, fuelled by retail investors with spare cash and free time because of coronavirus stimulus lockdowns.

Yet the assets have since decoupled, with bitcoin’s gains for the year so far outpaced by GameStop – up more than 1,000% – and AMC Entertainment, which has surged over 2,500%.

“It’s just an extension of free money just going crazy and so I think that has somewhat you can see that rippling over into cryptocurrencies,” said Joel Kruger, a strategist at crypto exchange LMAX Digital.

Meme-based cryptocurrency Dogecoin soars 40% to all-time high, BFSI News, ET BFSI

LONDON: Meme-based virtual currency Dogecoin soared on Wednesday to an all-time high, extending its 2021 rally to become the fourth-biggest digital coin.

Dogecoin, launched as a satirical critique of 2013’s cryptocurrency frenzy, has climbed 41% in the last 24 hours to a record $0.68, according to CoinMarketCap.

This year alone it has soared over 14,000%, from $0.00468 on Dec. 31, taking it past more widely used cryptocurrencies such as the Tether stablecoin and XRP to become the fourth-largest by market capitalisation.

Dogecoin – whose logo features a Shiba Inu dog at the centre of the meme – remains little used in commerce or payments. Like other digital coins, it is highly volatile and its price is heavily influenced by social media users.

On Tuesday, the New York crypto exchange Gemini said it would start letting users trade and custody the token.

Some cryptocurrency market players said its volatility was its main draw, with a mixture of retail investors and market makers fuelling its trading volumes.

“The ugly truth is that a lot of crypto valuations are divorced from reality anyway,” said Joseph Edwards, head of research at crypto brokerage Enigma Securities.

“Right now, (Dogecoin) is being seen as it’s always been seen – an asset with surprising staying power that provides opportunities to take advantage of volatility every year or so.”

Dogecoins are now cumulatively worth $88 billion, compared to bitcoin‘s $1 trillion and ethereum’s $391 billion.

XRP cryptocurrency tumbles as Coinbase exchange moves to suspend trading, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Cryptocurrency XRP slumped 19% on Tuesday after Coinbase, a major U.S. virtual coin exchange, said it would suspend trading in the digital currency.

California-based Coinbase said on Monday it would suspend trading in XRP after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) last week charged an associated blockchain firm, Ripple, with conducting a $1.3 billion unregistered securities offering.

Ripple has rejected the charges, saying XRP is a currency and does not need to be registered as an investment contract.

XRP, the third-biggest cryptocurrency, was last down 18.7% at an intra-day low of $0.20, its lowest since July. It has slumped by over half since the SEC move.

The move by Coinbase comes as it prepares for a stock market listing, with a confidential application to the SEC to go public. It would be the first major U.S. crypto exchange to list on the stock market.

Coinbase, one of the most well-known cryptocurrency platforms, said trading in XRP moved into limit only from Monday, and would be fully suspended on Jan. 19.

Financial regulators around the globe are still grappling with how to regulate bitcoin, XRP and rival cryptocurrencies. Investors are watching for regulatory developments that could determine whether cryptocurrencies leap from a niche to a mainstream asset.

XRP, which often moves in tandem with Bitcoin, had rocketed in November to hit its highest level since 2018 as a rally in cryptocurrencies gathered pace.
