India’s third-largest private sector bank, Axis Bank, has selected Amazon Web Services (AWS) to accelerate its digital transformation program and meet the growing demand for its digital banking services.

As part of a multi-year agreement, Axis Bank will draw on the breadth and depth of AWS services, including containers, database, and compute, to build a portfolio of new digital financial services to bring advanced banking experiences to customers, including online accounts that can be opened in under six minutes and instant digital payments, helping the bank increase customer satisfaction by 35% and lower costs by 24%, as claimed by the bank.

Axis Bank has so far deployed over 25 mission-critical applications on AWS, including a Buy Now Pay Later product and a new loan management system to support it, Account Aggregator, Video-Know Your Customer (V-KYC), and WhatsApp Banking. Axis Bank also plans to migrate 70% of its on-premises data center infrastructure in the next 24 months to further reduce costs.

Axis Bank said it believes building a cloud-native, design-centric engineering capability is critical to its success. To achieve this, the bank has dedicated over 800 people to its digital projects, built an in-house engineering and design team of more than 130 people, and established a cloud engineering practice centered on agile software development and DevOps principles.

Axis Bank launches WhatsApp banking

Axis Bank has partnered with WhatsApp to offer basic banking services to its customers.

“This will allow customers to seek information regarding their account balance, recent transactions, credit card payments, fixed and recurring deposit details, besides getting their queries answered in real-time,” the lender said in a statement on Wednesday.

Customers can use WhatsApp banking to chat with Axis Bank on queries related to their banking transactions, information like nearest branch, ATM or loan centre location, and can apply for various banking products as well, it further said. They can also block their credit or debit card using the secure end-to-end encrypted messaging channel.

City Union Bank launches ‘WhatsApp Banking’

City Union Bank (CUB) announced that it has launched ‘WhatsApp Banking’ – taking the digitisation journey for its customers to the next level.

In a press release, the Kumbakonam-headquartered bank said CUB’s customers can now do banking through WhatsApp on the go. CUB’s WhatsApp banking offers services such as instant account opening, balance enquiry, deposit opening, mini statement, PIN generation for net/mobile banking and bill payments.

Customers can also get account information, latest on offers, banking information and answers for their queries on various banking products.

Customers can register to WhatsApp banking by sending ‘Hi’ to bank’s customer care number ‘044-71225000’ through WhatsApp, the bank said.
