UPI transaction value doubled to Rs 6.06 lakh crore in July, BFSI News, ET BFSI

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions more than doubled in value in July over the year-ago period, outstripping payment by cards, which went up 42%, according to the latest Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data.

UPI transactions by value touched their highest ever in July at Rs 6.06 lakh crore, surpassing the previous record of Rs 5.47 lakh crore in June and up from Rs 2.91 lakh crore a year ago. Card spending at Rs 1.36 lakh crore in July, on the other hand, was the highest since April and rose from Rs 95,883 crore in the year earlier as the economy recovered.

UPI platforms saw a 109% jump as consumers took to digital payments for daily essentials at local stores as well as premium purchases.

“We are observing that a majority of online payments are through UPI platforms and apps such as Cred,” said Riyaaz Amlani, chief executive of Impresario Handmade Restaurants, which runs the Social, Smoke House Deli and Salt Water Café chains. Amlani said UPI adoption is rising as average order value at outlets has increased 20% after the pandemic’s second wave.

While the economy shows signs of recovery, discretionary spending using cards has grown but couldn’t match UPI, executives said.

Banks, Retailers Note Trend

Digital payments made on wallets and UPI platforms by volume rose to about 3.25 billion in July, from 1.5 billion a year ago. The number of payments using cards was 520 million, compared with 450 million a year earlier.

Le Marche Retail chief executive Amit Dutta said the premium grocery chain has observed the trend within stores as well as in-home transactions. “UPI payments are showing increased traction in the past year, driven by convenience and the transactions being contactless, compared to card swiping, where contact points are higher,” he said. Consumers not previously comfortable with UPI payments have overcome their initial hesitation, Dutta said.

Banks executives said card payments are also growing, though UPI platforms are growing faster.

“UPI growth rate is and will outstrip cards, and it comprises both peer-to-peer and merchants payments,” said Axis Bank head for cards and payments Sanjeev Moghe. “Cards are only for payment to merchants. As long as the cards segment is growing at over 30-40%, it is quite healthy.”

UPI, payment platforms and wallets account for 10-15% of sales at leading electronics retail chain Vijay Sales, said its director Nilesh Gupta, up from almost nil just a year ago. “Consumers are even buying high-ticket items through such modes. These platforms often offer cashback incentives to entice customers,” he said.

Digital Adoption

The government and the RBI have been focusing on facilitating digital adoption by enhancing acceptance infrastructure and introducing innovative payment options to deepen the reach of payment systems.

“UPI transactions have moved the needle substantially in the past 12-15 months for neighbourhood grocery stores, riding on three reasons — convenience, instant credit and contactless transactions,” said Prem Kumar, founder of Ratan Tata-backed retail tech company SnapBizz, which devises technology for over 30,000 kirana stores and does business transactions of over $1 billion a year.

RBI said in its latest annual report that efforts were also directed toward ensuring smooth functioning of all payment systems despite disruptions in movement and access to infrastructure caused by the Covid-19 lockdown, with varying intensity and duration across various locations in the country.

Remittances also contributed a chunk of UPI volume. The platform is expected to see more traction once all banks develop systems to support inward remittances on UPI platform, said Emil Ruban, country manager India at Ria Money Transfer. “Many banks are yet to develop cross-border money transfer facilities,” he said.

A Euromonitor report said the trend is expected to continue, with increasing acceptance of UPI. “A large number of consumers started using UPI transactions for daily shopping activities especially at local retail stores, with the outbreak of the pandemic,” said Euromonitor consultant Vishnu Vardhan.

Amid the second Covid-19 wave that has led to lockdowns in many States, digital payments continued to fall for a second consecutive month in May. Exception was payments through Bharat BillPay and Aadhaar Enabled Payment System (AePS).

Transactions through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) fell to a three-month low, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India.

The number of transactions on BHIM UPI fell to 253 crore in May amounting to ₹4.9 lakh crore as against 264 crore transactions worth ₹4.93 lakh crore in April. UPI transactions had crossed the ₹5-lakh crore in March, but has been falling since then due to the lockdowns.

Lower mobility

Similarly, transactions on the Immediate Payments Service platform also continued to slide down in May. As many as 27.98 crore transactions totalling ₹2.66 lakh crore were processed through IMPS in May. In comparison, 32.2 crore payments worth ₹2.99 lakh crore were made through IMPS in April.

Reflecting the lower mobility, transactions through FASTags also declined. A total of 11.64 crore transactions valued at ₹2,125.16 crore took place through NETC FASTags in May as against 16.43 crore transactions worth ₹2,776.9 crore in April this year.

With people preferring to stay at home and avoid crowds, payments on Bharat BillPay surged to 3.92 crore in May after a slight dip in April when it was at 3.53 crore. Payments worth ₹6,270.31 crore took place through the platform in May compared to ₹5,201.92 crore in April.

WhatsApp Pay remains in the slow lane four months since November launch

There has also been little marketing buzz around the payment feature and, not to forget, a majority of WhatsApp’s 400 million-strong user base in India lacks access to it.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions through WhatsApp remained tepid in March, four months since the feature went live for 20 million users on the messaging app. Despite early predictions that payments via the messaging app would explode once the feature went live, WhatsApp accounted for only 0.02% of UPI volumes and 0.01% of transaction value.

Industry executives FE spoke to said that the limited number of transactions might be attributable to the fact that the Facebook-owned company may not have begun implementing its plans for payments. “They haven’t quite given it a push, at least not yet,” a senior executive with a private bank said on condition of anonymity.

What this means is that they have not aggressively started acquiring merchants to enable peer-to-merchant (P2M) transactions. There has also been little marketing buzz around the payment feature and, not to forget, a majority of WhatsApp’s 400 million-strong user base in India lacks access to it. The company does have about 15 million users on its WhatsApp for Business app, designed specifically for the kirana shop owner. In 2019, the company released catalogues for shop owners to showcase their products to their customers and in 2020, it added more new features to the business app.

An email seeking a response from WhatsApp India on its payments strategy remained unanswered till the time of going to press. In December, the company had announced its plans to enable the sale of “sachet-sized” health insurance products through its platform. The messaging giant is also running pilots in the areas of micro-pension, edtech and agritech, said Abhijit Bose, head of WhatsApp India, speaking at Facebook’s Fuel for India event.

While State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and Axis Bank are WhatsApp’s partners in payments, in the pension and insurance space, the company would be partnering with pinBox Solutions, HDFC Pension Management Company and SBI General Insurance. “WhatsApp has proactively been working on several pilots to help ensure that every adult has access to the most basic and critical financial livelihood services through their mobile device. By the end of this year, we expect that people will be able to buy affordable sachet-sized health insurance through WhatsApp,” Bose had said, adding that the company is also working on pension services for the informal sector in India.

In February 2018, when WhatsApp had gone for a beta launch of its payments facility for 1 million of its 230 million users, Credit Suisse had said that the feature could lead digital payments “to explode” and grow the size of the market to US$1 trillion over a five-year horizon.

In March 2021, PhonePe led the UPI market, processing 44% of all transactions on the channel and crossing the 1 billion-transaction mark during the month. It was followed by Google Pay and Paytm.

UPI transactions rise rose 19% month-on-month to hit Rs 5.05 lakh crore in March

[ad_1]

In the six months to September 2020, payments through UPI-based applications surpassed 50% of total retail digital payments in volume, becoming the most popular transaction method for cashless transactions, Moody’s said in a recent report.

The value of transactions through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) rose 19% month-on-month (m-o-m) to Rs 5.05 lakh crore. Volumes rose by an equivalent amount to 2.73 billion, according to data released by National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) on Twitter.

Growth in UPI volumes has been driven over the last year by burgeoning QR-based acceptance points across the country. FE reported last month the value of peer-to-merchant (P2M) transactions through UPI has exceeded that of transactions made using credit cards or debit cards at points of sale (PoS). Such P2M transactions have benefited from the zero-merchant discount rate (MDR) regime. Innovations in merchant alert systems have also done a lot to boost merchant transactions over the channel. In the six months to September 2020, payments through UPI-based applications surpassed 50% of total retail digital payments in volume, becoming the most popular transaction method for cashless transactions, Moody’s said in a recent report.

In the early years of its growth, UPI was growing largely on the back of peer-to-peer (P2P) payments, with the P2M piece accounting for 20-30%. That equation may have changed with the demands of social distancing leading more people to opt for digital payments.

The next phase of growth in UPI transactions could be driven by innovations that are likely to be ushered in by the new umbrella entity (NUE) licensees. NPCI is itself working on developing a platform for feature phones which, too, could have a role in driving growth.

In a recent note, Moody’s said there is still ample room for growth in digital transactions in the Indian context, led by UPI. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) estimates that the number of digital transactions will jump to 87 billion in 2021 from about 40 billion in 2020. “India has a number of factors favourable for the further development of digital financial services, including a large and growing middle-class population and a well-established digital identification system,” Moody’s said, adding that only State Bank of India (SBI) and a few large private banks have the resources to effectively capitalise on growing preferences for digital services among consumers and businesses.

UPI transactions had exited 2020 with the Rs 4-lakh-crore value mark in December.

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transaction volume and value have witnessed a contraction in February 2021 — the first time since April last year. From 2302.73 million transactions involving Rs 4,31,181.89 crore processed in January 2021, the number of transactions declined to 2,292.90 million worth Rs 4,25,062.76 crore in February 2021, according to the data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). UPI transactions had ended 2020 on a high note with the total value storming past the Rs 4-lakh-crore mark in December to Rs 4.16 lakh crore across 2,234.16 million transactions.

UPI is currently the biggest among the NPCI operated systems including NACH, IMPS, AEPS, BBPS, RuPay, etc.

UPI transactions ended 2020 on a high note. The value for digital transactions done via UPI stormed past the Rs 4-lakh-crore mark in December, according to the latest UPI data from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). 2.23 billion transactions worth Rs 4.16 lakh crore were recorded in December, up from 2.21 billion transactions involving Rs 3.91 lakh crore in November. The year-on-year growth in volume stood at 70 per cent from 1.30 billion transactions while the value of UPI transactions increased 105 per cent from 2.02 lakh crore in December 2019. Moreover, the number of banks live on the UPI platform increased from 143 to 207 during the 12-month period.

Among the leading UPI players, Google Pay and PhonePe had together cornered over 82 per cent of the market by volume and over 86 per cent by value in November. While Google Pay processed 960.02 million transactions involving Rs 1.61 lakh crore, PhonePe, saw 868.4 million transactions worth Rs 1.75 lakh crore. Paytm had processed 260 million payments.

The transaction volume and value have apparently scaled up faster during the Covid and lockdown phases as people switched to digital mode to avoid cash usage. The volume jumped by 908.47 million transactions during the 10-month period from 1.32 billion transactions in February 2020, according to the analysis of NPCI data. However, in comparison, similar volume growth of 908.47 million transactions, before Covid, took 17 months (from September 2018) to reach the February 2020 level.
