The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) ban on Mastercard is likely to create a near monopoly in India’s credit card market, with the US-based card network Visa likely cornering a significant chunk of the new business that earlier went to its global rival.

While homegrown platforms are expected to gain modestly, Visa’s superior reward offerings to merchants and the government’s zero Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) rule on National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) is likely to put Visa in an advantageous position.

Private lender HDFC Bank, which is currently facing its own ban on onboarding new card customers, already has plans to roll out debit cards under Visa and RuPay.

Mastercard is a significant franchise partner for the bank, but the good part is like in most of our businesses, we patronise on open architecture,” said Sashidhar Jagdishan, MD, HDFC Bank. “Whether it’s for cards, insurance, mutual funds, we distribute a lot of company products. Even in cards, we have a lot of franchisees – Visa, Mastercard or Rupay. So, until the ban on Mastercard is lifted and when our ban is lifted, the new cards could be on either of the platforms.”

According to a source, several leading co-branded partnerships such as those of Flipkart and Axis Bank and Indigo and Kotak Mahindra Bank were on Mastercard as well. These contracts are now expected to go to Visa.

Another area where Visa can prosper is the up and coming commercial credit card space where Mastercard and Visa currently have cornered the entire market. “These are typically cards issued for corporate purchases and spending on these cards go up to Rs 500 crore a month for large sized companies,” said a payments executive. “RuPay doesn’t have any exposure in this space; therefore, almost all new contracts on this piece are expected to be landed by Visa.”

Visa is also likely to have an upper hand in getting new debit card issuance contracts as well. The central government’s zero MDR rule on RuPay debit cards means that private sector banks that were tying up with Mastercard will almost exclusively move to Visa.

“Banks cannot make money through RuPay debit transactions. Unless there is a mandate as with public sector banks, most others won’t be compelled to shift their card issuance network to RuPay as it won’t make them any money. This puts Visa in a seriously advantageous position in the Indian market,” said an industry official.

On the debit card, most leading banks have multiple tie-ups with all three major card networks and internally switching the issuance infrastructure would not be a major challenge. However, for certain banks such as RBL Bank and Yes Bank which had exclusive tie up with Mastercard, RBI’s new diktat could affect their plans.

RBI doesn’t disclose the share of Mastercard and Visa in the overall payments system. Most banks have both Mastercard and Visa and in some cases RuPay as their payment platform for cards.

“We have already taken note of the situation and will soon be moving to the Visa platform for most of our debit and credit card requirements,” said another private lender that had co-branded with Mastercard. “But we believe that the onboarding to a new platform could take about two months.”

Even as banks have transmitted rate cuts most to the MSME sector and education loans during pandemic, they are still perceived to be risky. The spread over one year benchmark lending rate is highest for such loans, according to a study by RBI economists

Spreads of weighted average lending rates (WALRs) on fresh rupee loans over 1-year marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) for loans to MSME was 179 basis points (bps- one bps is 0.01 per cent) in May, factoring the median WALR at 7.28 per cent even as banks transmitted 132 bps of policy rate cuts during the pandemic between April 2020 and May 2021, analysis by the economists in a study published in the latest monthly bulletin showed. Such spread for education loan was 219 per cent and the banks transmitted 162 basis points. Put simply, even though these loans are risky, lending rates were lowered to revive activities.

“Despite the restructuring, however, stress in the MSME portfolio of PSBs remains high” noted RBI’s latest financial stability report (FSR). ” Given the elevated level of debt of the stressed cohort, the implications of business disruptions following the resurgence of the pandemic could be significant.”

” (The spreads) were uneven across sectors reflecting their varied credit risk profiles and business strategies followed by banks” the study noted. The spread was among the lowest in respect of housing loans, reflecting lower defaults and the availability of collaterals and highest for personal loans . “Personal loans (other than housing and vehicle loans) are mostly unsecured and involve higher credit risk and hence, the spread charged was the highest for other personal loans”. But in terms of transmission, personal loans were lower by only around 100 bps points during the period.

Boosted by The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS) disbursements to eligible categories, net credit flow to stressed MSMEs during March 2020-February 2021 rose to Rs 50,535 crore with the shares of public sector banks and private sector banks at 54 per cent and 35 per cent, respectively, according to the latest Financial Stability Report. The Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme provides 100% guarantee to banks for loan portfolio of up to Rs. 3 lakh crore to eligible MSMEs.

“Going forward, close monitoring on asset quality of MSME and retail portfolios of banks is warranted” the financial” the FSR noted.

Rating agencies have warned of balance sheet implication for banks. “The reduced dent on the balance sheet of financial institutions over the last year may deepen further in case the regulator withdraws its supportive stance to eligible segments under the retail, agriculture and MSME industry” said the July review by Brickwork Ratings.

Inside BharatPe-Centrum proposed JV to acquire troubled PMC Bank, BFSI News, ET BFSI

BharatPe’s proposed joint venture with non-banking financial company Centrum Finance to set up a Small Finance Bank (SFB) that will acquire troubled Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank is a landmark event for fintech players harbouring banking ambitions.

The deal, however, has not been easy to stitch up.

The story of how a startup has within three years partnered a 44-year-old NBFC led by veteran banker Jaspal Bindra to acquire a banking licence has more to it than meets the eye.

The idea behind this SFB is anything but conventional – considering BharatPe’s leadership dynamics to the Reserve Bank of India’s approach towards reviving a dying bank.

“As far as resolution plans go (for PMC Bank), this is a highly unusual one,” a senior banker at a private sector lender said. “While there is no set resolution framework to revive a dying bank, it is definitely a measure RBI has taken out of desperation rather than choice.”

Over the last two weeks, ET spoke to more than a dozen sources to make sense of the Centrum-BharatPe SFB.

We asked them what the central bank’s thinking was, how soon PMC Bank’s depositors could access their hard-earned deposits and what were the conditions that RBI had conveyed to stakeholders in private before giving approval to set up the SFB.

Special Exemption
The alleged Rs 6,500-crore fraud at PMC Bank is one where several regulatory and audit checks had been given the go-by over the last two decades.

The bank’s board had for many years allegedly concealed loan defaults by real estate firm Housing Development and Infrastructure Ltd (HDIL) of the Wadhawan Group.

Ultimately, the RBI had to step in to freeze depositors’ accounts last year. In light of this, the resolution plan has to be completed at the earliest since retail depositors’ withdrawal limits have been capped at Rs 50,000.

Even as the Centrum-BharatPe bid received its nod, the banking regulator has been at the forefront of drafting the resolution plan, which includes repaying depositors’ principal along with interest.

“The sense is that while a significant portion, or 45% of deposits less than Rs 5 lakh, will be returned as soon as the Deposit Insurance Scheme kicks in, the rest – amounting to deposits of nearly Rs 5,000 crore – will be converted into a low-yielding debt instrument, likely a 10-year bond,” a source privy to the plan told ET.

RBI has yet to finalise these though.

Ashneer Grover, the cofounder of BharatPe, said operationalisation of the SFB was still “3-4 months away.”

There are other deal riders not yet in the public domain.

These include the future structuring and listing propositions for the SFB, sources close to the company said.

The as-yet unnamed SFB will be a 50-50% partnership between BharatPe’s parent Resilient Innovations and Centrum Finance.

A typical NBFC converted to an SFB is given three years’ time after achieving a net worth of Rs 500 crore before its mandatory Initial Public Offering (IPO). The proposed JV has been provided a special exemption to go in for an IPO in six years.

Second, Centrum and BharatPe must also reduce their combined shareholding to less than 50% from the current 100%.

RBI has sought that the process be completed in eight years.

While Centrum can hold 40% stake, Resilient Innovations has been told to cut its stake to a maximum of 10%.

This effectively means that BharatPe will lose majority ownership of the banking venture by 2030.

The SFB will also not be allowed to offer housing loans or microcredit until Centrum Group is able to hive off its own housing finance and microfinance arms.

Both the owners had agreed to these conditions before RBI gave the in-principle approval.

A merchant-focussed bank
According to sources, the bank will be positioned as “India’s first merchant-focused bank.”“BharatPe is planning on building a lot of its offerings around merchant-focused credit and savings products,” a person directly aware of the matter said.

According to sources, the SFB is likely to offer loans to small and medium enterprises as well as unsecured retail loans lower than Rs 50,000.

BharatPe is likely to take the lead in acquiring merchants and providing technology support to the banking entity, while Centrum will handle financials and compliances.

BharatPe will not transfer its existing merchant base of around six million small vendors to the new SFB as most are with its existing banking partners, ICICI Bank and Yes Bank. These merchants could, however, be a base for cross selling its loan products.

The firm is also expected to retain its autonomous identity as a payment-focused fintech.

The SFB could also leverage BharatPe’s digital payment capabilities while building out new products, just like the operational structure currently followed by fintech unicorn Paytm and its Payments Bank entity.

“We will continue to operate as an independent entity,” Grover told ET. “For its payments business, BharatPe works with multiple banks (ICICI, Yes Bank) and will continue to do so. There are no plans to transition the existing base to the new SFB. We will work with the new SFB in areas where it adds value to our existing and to-be-acquired merchant base.”

Centrum Finance did not respond to ET’s queries.

The promoters of Centrum and BharatPe are expected to commit Rs 1,800 crore to the SFB, of which Rs 900 crore will be infused in the first year, Grover said. The remaining will be infused “when needed,” he added.

Next leg of growth?
Centrum Finance’s Bindra, a veteran banker and formerly head of Standard Chartered’s Asia unit, has reportedly been influential in getting RBI’s approval in the JV’s favour.

The banking foray by BharatPe – which has been working with Centrum Finance for the last three years – is expected to boost its next leg of growth for several reasons.

While there is an obvious opportunity to increase margins on loans through lowered cost of acquiring funds, there could be a greater purpose, sources said.

Payments companies no longer command the same valuation premiums as they did a few years back.

Competition from players such as Walmart, Google and Amazon mean that a company looking to build a profitable payment business will need to compete effectively with these tech giants – an endeavour where Paytm has also failed.

The differentiator is, therefore, in having a banking licence, which is not easy to get for companies outside India’s legacy banking ecosystem.

This not only increases the entry barrier to compete at the same scale but allows the company to expand its product portfolio significantly.

“What is happening here is BharatPe wants to emulate Paytm, but on steroids,” said an industry expert.

“As a banking entity where the entry barriers are high, BharatPe will bypass the competitive challenges it was set for several years before making a meaningful dent. It will now be a banking entity and have access to cheaper funds and the margins will be much higher. As a bank, you are destined to be profitable, and that for an Indian fintech is invaluable,” the expert said.

BharatPe is on the verge of closing a $350 million funding round led by Tiger Global, which will likely make it a unicorn, valuing it at around $2.8 billion, a person directly aware of the matter said.

Leadership changes
BharatPe has made at least six senior management hires in the last year. It expects to do the same this year as well.

Suhail Sameer was brought in last year as group president and has emerged as an influential voice within the company. He is expected to assume the role of ‘founder’. Sameer is also now positioned as the only other public face of the startup besides Grover.

Bhavik Koladiya and Shashvat Nakrani are the other cofounders of BharatPe.

Koladiya has largely been under the radar but sources aware of BharatPe’s origin said he has been hands-on as a founder from the beginning. In fact, Grover met Koladiya and firmed up plans to set up BharatPe and soon Nakrani joined as well, a person aware of the matter said.

Earlier this year, Guatam Kaushik joined BharatPe as group president, the second executive at this level after Sameer.

Kaushik was CEO of loyalty platform Payback India, which was acquired by BharatPe in June.

Sameer has been virtually leading all the funding talks and been a core part of strategic decision making at BharatPe.

“He has been actively involved in all the fundraising discussions with investors — for both equity and debt rounds. As the company moves to the next stage of its journey -especially with banking aspirations – it’s important to have senior experienced executives at the helm and that’s why Sameer has become critical to BharatPe’s strategic decision making,” a person aware of the thinking of the company and its investors said.

BharatPe also hired Parth Joshi as chief marketing officer in June.

While senior executives like Sameer and others strengthen its leadership team, sources said some of BharatPe’s investors have not been comfortable with Grover’s mercurial style of leadership.

Grover said this was not true.

“We have a strong leadership team of 14 people, including the founders. All of us are well established professionals in our respective domains and bring enormous credibility and expertise to BharatPe. We all have our role to play for the success of BharatPe. Suhail is a critical member of this leadership team, like others,” he said.

Grover’s public remarks on disputes with rivals like PhonePe have not helped in addressing these concerns, the sources added.

“Our investors are extremely supportive of BharatPe and what we have built in such a short span of time. Leadership hiring is done in sync with the business requirements,” Grover said.

One of the sources said: “Look, every founder has his way of doing things and not everyone will like it. Some have had concerns but that doesn’t dilute Grover’s position as a cofounder.”

BharatPe is also on the lookout for senior management roles in compliance, finance and legal departments to strengthen its entry into the world of banking.

“The other younger members of the founding team have done well but the need for more experienced hands was felt and thus they continue to beef up the senior positions,” one person said.

HDFC Bank cautious on retail biz, BFSI News, ET BFSI

Mumbai: The second wave of the pandemic has turned HDFC Bank cautious with respect to retail loans. The bank’s overall retail loan book shrank from Rs 5.27 lakh crore at the end-March 2021 to Rs 5.23 lakh crore at the end-June. Retail loans fell with a drop in credit card outstandings, auto loans, two-wheeler loans and loans against securities.

According to HDFC Bank’s chief financial officer Srinivasan Vaidyanathan, credit card outstanding shrank to Rs 60,429 crore in end-June from Rs 64,674 crore in end-March because of a drop in revolving credit. He said that the focus was on the quality of credit and around three-fourths of the bank’s credit card customers have deposits that are on average five times the credit card outstanding. He was addressing analysts in a conference call after the bank’s results for the first quarter of the current fiscal.

Speaking in the same call, head (retail assets) Arvind Kapil said that the bank was now seeing buoyancy returning to the personal loan segment and expects good growth in future.

The bank, which is facing a freeze on issuing new cards, has completed an audit of its IT systems as required by the RBI and is now waiting to hear from the central bank. Even as it awaits the RBI’s nod for resuming card issuance, the bank is rapidly growing its card-acceptance business. Vaidyanathan said that the bank already has 2.3 million merchant-acceptance points and it has a 50% market share of merchants being on-boarded for card acceptance as against 40% last year.

HDFC Bank’s chief credit officer Jimmy Tata said that, during the quarter, things had not been the most orderly because of the second wave. “We were pretty much back to pre-Covid level until March, till the second wave hit us in April. We found our staff getting infected rapidly and we stopped going out on recovery calls. Most of the work was work-from-home. It is only in the month of June that we had the ability to start going out,” he said. In the second quarter, there has been a high level of vaccinations in the bank and staff have returned to the office for calling on borrowers.

According to Tata, the one product segment that has seen a non-Covid impact was diesel commercial vehicles (CVs), because they have not been able to pass on the sharp hike in fuel costs. He said that the bank was watching the portfolio as it would take two quarters for the price hike to be passed on. “We expect that by the festival season, things would have been brought back on an even keel, with cost increases passed on.”

On the cards business, Srinivasan said that HDFC Bank’s debit card issuance would not be hit because of the ban on Mastercard except for a couple of co-branded cards. He said that cards contribute between one-fourth to a third of the bank’s fee income in any quarter.

IDBI Bank to explore avenues to grow corporate credit: Rakesh Sharma

IDBI Bank may explore avenues to grow its corporate credit book, especially in the mid-corporate segment, in a risk-calibrated and cautious manner, following the exit from the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) Prompt Corrective Action (PCA) framework, according to MD & CEO Rakesh Sharma.

The bank’s loan book composition of retail to corporate advances was at 62:38 as at end-March 2021, against 56:44 as at end-March 2020.

When IDBI Bank was brought under PCA in May 2017, its loan book composition of retail to corporate advances was at 43:57.

“The exit from the RBI’s PCA framework (with effect from March 10, 2021) has unlocked huge potential for your bank as it can now undertake a wide-range of banking activities and tap the emerging opportunities to boost its business performance. Your bank will continue to remain committed towards its strategic positioning as a retail-oriented bank with focus on growing the share of the loan book of retail and small & medium-sized enterprises,” Sharma said in a message to the shareholders.

When RBI initiates PCA for a bank, it imposes restrictions on the expansion wholesale portfolio, branch expansion, dividend distribution, among others.

PCA is invoked by RBI when a bank breaches any of the four risk thresholds relating to capital, asset quality, profitability and leverage.

IDBI Bank was able to reduce its Risk Weighted Assets (RWA) from Rs 1.59 lakh crore as at end-March 2020 to Rs 1.57 lakh crore as at end-March 2021. According to Sharma, this was a consequence of shifting towards a more retail-oriented portfolio mix, coupled with certain strategic capital conservation measures.

The IDBI Bank Chief said, “Since the muted operating environment clouds the outlook for the lending activity, your bank will focus on maximising fee income. At the same time, to boost the bottom-line, your Bank will work towards minimising its operating expenses and increasing productivity.”

MR Kumar, Chairman, IDBI Bank, in his message to the shareholders, observed that it is inevitable that the year ahead will be peppered with challenges stemming from wavering confidence among businesses as well as consumers as also sputtering momentum of economic activities.

“A health emergency of this magnitude has demanded extraordinary responses and outcomes from all the affected population, businesses as well as policymakers. Under these circumstances, the Bank remains committed to being with its customers and ensuring seamless delivery of financial services and will participate in the relief measures to mitigate the impact of the crisis,” Kumar said.

He underscored that IDBI Bank is cognisant of the elevated risks in the operating environment and will take steps to remain strong and resilient and be well-positioned to absorb potential losses that could arise.

Meanwhile, referring to the Government’s directive of rationalisation of overseas operations, IDBI Bank said it is undertaking necessary steps.

IDBI Bank has one overseas branch at Dubai International Financial Centre (DIFC). It has completed 11 years of operations.

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India on Thursday said the next purchase of government securities for an aggregate amount of Rs 20,000 crore under the G-sec Acquisition Programme (G-SAP 2.0) will be conducted on July 22. On June 4, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das had announced that the central bank will conduct the open market purchase of government securities of Rs 1.2 lakh crore under the G-SAP 2.0 in the second quarter of 2021-22 to support the market.

On July 22, the RBI will purchase four government securities of different maturities through a multi-security auction using the multiple price method.

The central bank said it reserves the right to decide on the quantum of purchase of individual securities, and purchase marginally higher/lower than the aggregate amount due to rounding-off.

The result of the auctions will be announced on the same day, it added.

The first purchase under G-SAP 2.0 aggregating to Rs 20,000 crore was conducted on July 8.

The RBI had conducted an open market purchase of government securities of Rs 1 lakh crore under the G-SAP 1.0 in the first quarter of 2021-22.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed changes in rules for fundraising by primary (urban) co-operative banks. On Wednesday, the central bank released a draft circular for issue and regulation of share capital and securities of primary (urban) co-operative banks.

“UCBs are permitted to raise equity share capital, as hitherto, by way of issue of equity shares to persons within their area of operation enrolled as members, in accordance with the provisions of their bye-laws, and issue of additional equity shares to the existing members,” it said.

The RBI has proposed that any refund of share capital to members, or their nominees, should be subject to the certain conditions — the bank’s capital adequacy ratio is 9 per cent or above, both as per the latest audited financial statements and the last CRAR as assessed by the RBI during statutory inspection.

Such refund should not result in the bank’s capital adequacy falling below regulatory minimum of 9 per cent. The RBI has directed cooperative banks to ensure their investors are educated on the risk characteristics of regulatory capital requirements.

It has also asked cooperative banks to have a specific sign-off from the investors to ensure they have understood the features and risks of the instruments. The urban co-operative banks have been asked to not benchmark floating rate instruments to the fixed deposit rate.

The pandemic underscored India’s disruptive progress on the touchstone of financial inclusion, with federal welfare payouts directly reaching the intended beneficiaries in a largely fraud-proof ecosystem undergirded by legacy lenders, nimble fintech firms and pertinent digital regulations. “Financial inclusion was actually tried and tested in terms of scale and volume during the pandemic,” financial services secretary Debasish Panda said at the ET Financial Inclusion Summit. Reliance on the digital infrastructure largely cut out the scope of pilferage in the distribution of federal welfare packages, Panda said.

“This is thanks to the vision of our PM, who thought so in 2015,” Panda said. “Today, it’s a reality and during the pandemic, we used it to the full extent.” Panda said that the government has been asking banks to partner with fintechs, as these new-age firms operate in different ecosystems and geographies, carving out innovative solutions.

“What we are doing now is bringing more, new-to-credit micro enterprises in the formal banking channel. We are taking help from fintechs, carving out innovative solutions for segments and geographies,” he said, adding that fintech firms are trying to connect alternative data points. “I don’t have a credit history but I have a spending history; so they collect those sets of data, do an analysis, use technology and then build a dossier for that individual which then becomes comfortable for the bank to lend,” he said, adding that banks and insurance companies also see value here. Panda said that the regulatory arrangement is already there for fintech firms to operate. “The RBI and IRDAI have provided a sandbox kind of an arrangement where fintech or insurance tech can try and test it on the ground and once the proof of concept is established, they can straightway get the licence and carry the work forward,” he said.

The financial services secretary noted that the basic tenets of the financial inclusion plan are banking the unbanked, securing the unsecured and funding the unfunded. “The three pillars have then created a digital pipeline of Jan Dhan accounts, Aadhaar and the Mobile (JAM), which have built a regular flow of benefits and services,” he said. The number of Jan Dhan accounts stand at 420 million, and more than 55% of these belong to women beneficiaries. Panda said that through opening bank accounts, the initial target was to saturate every household.

“The next target was to saturate every adult and that has also happened to a large extent; there are certain pockets where there is a little shortfall and work is in progress,” he said. The government is now identifying districts not matching with the national-level average. The government further aims to ensure availability of a banking touchpoint for any habitat within a radius of 5 kilometres.

Panda noted that micro finance institutions have the connect with the last-mile borrower. “Banks are tying up with MFIs under the co-lending arrangement of the RBI, where the interest gets blended so it comes down also to the end borrower and the credit is flowing,” he said.

Panda said that the transition toward New India is gathering pace. “We are trying to power India toward a $5-trillion economy; so unless we take this population above that threshold, we will be left behind. So efforts are on,” he said.

Mastercard ban to hit banks’ card operations, income

India’s decision to ban Mastercard Inc for non-compliance with data storage rules has unsettled the country’s financial sector as it will disrupt banks’ card offerings and hit revenues, payments and banking industry executives told Reuters.

Wednesday’s central bank order followed similar action in April against American Express, but Mastercard is a much bigger player in the Indian market, where many lenders offer cards using the US firm’s payments network.

A Reuters analysis of online card listings of 11 domestic and foreign banks in India showed Mastercard accounted for about a third of roughly 100 debit cards on offer, and more than 75credit card variants used its network.

RBI action on Mastercard: SBI Card sees minimal impact on its new customer acquisitions

From July 22, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said, new issuance of such cards will stop as Mastercard did not comply with 2018 rules requiring foreign card networks to store Indian payments data locally for “unfettered supervisory access”.

Though existing customers will not be hit, business impact will be significant as banks need to sign new commercial deals with rival networks such as Visa, a process that can take months and involve weeks of back-end technology integration,five payment and banking executives said.

One banking executive said the switch to Visa could take as long as five months. And with American Express and Mastercard prohibited, Visa gets an unprecedented advantage in negotiations in a credit card market it already dominates.

“It will mean temporary disruption for banks, a lot of hectic negotiations and loss of business in the short term,” said one of the sources, a senior Indian banker.

“This is consistent with our considerable and continued investments in our customers and partners in India to advance the government’s Digital India vision,” Mastercard said in a statement on Thursday.

The decision is a major setback for Mastercard, which counts India as a key market. In 2019, Mastercard said it was “bullish on India”, announcing $1 billion in investment over the next five years, after investing $1 billion from 2014 to 2019.

Mastercard also has research and technology centres in India, where its workforce of 4,000 is the second largest after the United States, having grown from 29 in 2013.

High card usage, income impact

Indians’ use of credit and debit cards has risen as digital payments have spread. By May, RBI data shows, there were more than 62 million credit cards and about 902 million debit cards,which together accounted for transactions worth $40.4 billion.

The delays in transition to Visa are also seen hitting bank fees and other incomes they generate from their cards business,the sources said.

In a research note on RBI’s decision, Macquarie flagged as a “key concern” the risk that banks could suffer as credit cards were a profitable product with a so-called post-tax return on assets of around 5-6 per cent.

Some banks, such as India’s RBL, lists 42 credit cards on its website, all using the Mastercard network, while Yes Bank lists seven using Mastercard, though none on Visa. The Citibank website offers four Mastercard credit cards.

RBL said in a statement on Thursday that it had reached a pact with Visa for its credit cards after the RBI order, but integration would take up to 10 weeks.

One of the sources said, however, that negotiations for the deal had taken six months.

RBL said it had a share of five per cent in the credit card market but its issuance of 100,000 new cards each month could potentially be affected. Its stock fell more than three per cent in early trade.

Yes Bank in a statement said it is “evaluating migration to other platforms for seamless transition” for issuing new credit cards. A Citibank spokesperson told Reuters it was working with its partner Mastercard “to evaluate any potential impact”.
