KVG Bank making efforts to improve digitisation in rural areas: Chairman

The efforts put in by Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB), a regional rural bank headquartered in Dharwad, has helped people in more than 40 villages to get round-the-clock access to banking system, according to P Gopi Krishna, Chairman of KVGB.

He was speaking on Monday after receiving the ‘Best Regional Rural Bank’ (RRB) award under the Regional Rural Banks Category by ASSOCHAM (Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India) in recognition of the bank’s initiatives in digital financial services in response to Aatmanirbhar Bharat programme.

He said because of the best efforts put in by the bank more than 40 villages have been converted into 100 per cent digital villages under its jurisdiction. People in these villages have round-the-clock access to banking system through Internet banking, mobile banking, micro-ATMs, AePS (Aadhar-enabled Payment Systems), IMPS and UPI.

Stating that digitisation has benefited villages by facilitating cashless transactions, he said KVGB’s contribution in this context has become significant in achieving the national initiative to digitise rural banking.

Gopi Krishna said the focus of the government on financial inclusion and digitisation, especially after demonitisation, has made very big impact on unbanked masses towards banking services. Now villagers are also well acquainted with cash alternatives such as debit/credit cards, mobile/internet banking, Aadhaar payments, he said.

Over a span of six to seven years, the number of banking outlets has increased in villages. This has helped many villagers to have basic savings bank deposit account of their own. He said agricultural credit offtake has almost doubled now.

R Gurumurthy, Regional Director of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), who handed over the award to KVGB at Bengaluru on Monday, appreciated the efforts put in by KVGB in digitisation.

Stating that the country is moving towards cashless economy, he said efforts towards digitisation will help the country keep pace with the fast-changing world.

Brij Mohan Sharma, Executive Director of Canara Bank, said the creation of a digital environment is now a priority for RRBs. Time is not far when digitisation will change the face of the rural economy, he said.

Niraj Kumar Verma, Chief General Manager of NABARD, said NABARD is keenly watching the progress and involvement of RRBs and extending timely guidance and support. Over the years, the RRBs have made impressive strides on various business indicators, including digitisation, he said.

KVG Bank launches FRUITS portal

The Dharwad-headquartered Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB), in association with the Karnataka government, has launched ‘Farmer Registration and Unified Beneficiary Information System’ (FRUITS) portal.

Inaugurating the portal in Dharwad on Monday, Niraj Kumar Verma, Chief General Manager of Nabard, said the FRUITS portal is the first of its kind in the country where in the land and other details of all the farmers in the State are being captured.

In this latest initiative by the Karnataka government, all the farmers will be registered and given a FRUITS ID (FID) number. Using this number, the financial and lending institutions can access the land details of farmers as well as their borrowings and take a quick decision on lending to them depending on their requirements, he said.

Appreciating KVGB for accepting the FRUITS pilot project, he hoped that all financial institutions will be on boarded to the portal soon so as to have a single data source of farmers. He thanked the Karnataka Department of e-Governance, and Canara Bank (sponsor bank of KVGB) for spearheading this initiative.

P Gopi Krishna, Chairman of KVGB, said that this being the latest initiative by the Karnataka government each farmer will be given a FRUITS ID comprising Aadhaar, land records and mobile number. A well organised and scrutinised farmer database will avoid farmers from running pillar to post for availing benefits, he said.

KVG Bank targets ₹31,000 crore business for 2021-22

Karnataka Vikas Grameen Bank (KVGB), a regional rural bank headquartered in Dharwad, is targeting a business of ₹31,000 crore for 2021-22.

Addressing a virtual media conference on Monday, P Gopikrishna, Chairman of the bank, said the bank reached a business level of ₹27,818 crore during 2020-21 as against ₹26,268.81 crore in the previous fiscal, recording a growth of 5.9 per cent.

Stating that this growth is well comparable with growth percentage of other banks, he said more thrust will be given to agriculture, MSME (micro, small and medium enterprises), retail lending during the year.

The bank is targeting a deposit of ₹17,500 crore and advances of ₹13,500 crore during the year.

He said KVGB, which has registered an operating profit of ₹124.89 crore in this adverse situation, has emerged stronger with its focus on rural development, agriculture, MSME and digitalisation initiatives.

The bank registered an operating profit of ₹124.89 crore in 2020-21 as against an operating loss of ₹179.90 crore during 2019-20.

Gross income of the bank increased to ₹1,589.53 crore (₹1,492.84 crore), and the total expenditure came down to ₹1,583.03 crore (₹2,097.80 crore).

After making a provision of ₹118.39 crore towards tax and other provisions, the bank recorded a net profit of ₹6.50 crore for 2020-21.

He said increase in the NPA (non-performing assets) and creation of pension fund as per the Supreme Court orders attracted higher provisioning.

He said that the outbreak of Covid pandemic and continuous drought for the last five-six years adversely affected the recovery efforts of the bank.

In spite of unfavourable climatic conditions, the bank curtailed its net NPA to 9.22 per cent with an outstanding cash recovery of ₹1,007.37 crore during the year, Gopikrishna said.

KVGB has jurisdiction over Dharwad, Haveri, Gadag, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts of Karnataka.

KVG Bank inks pact with fintech platform

Karnataka Vikas Grameena Bank (KVGB) has signed a memorandum of understanding with ‘Jai Kisan’ (a rural-focused fintech platform of Greenizon Agritech Consultancy Pvt Ltd) to expand access to financial services to individuals and businesses in Karnataka, including farmer and non-farmer entrepreneurs.

A press release said that P Gopikrishna, Chairman of KVGB, and Arjun Ahluwalia, founder and CEO of Jai Kisan, signed the MoU in Dharwad.

Gopikrishna said that the bank intends to extend its services to small and micro enterprises (SME), joint liability groups (JLG), self-help groups (SHG), and to farmers through Kisan Credit Card (KCC) and credit for farm mechanisation efforts through its partnership with Jai Kisan. This partnership will enable them to systemically increase reach and serve consumers and create grassroots level impact by extending low-cost credit to the rural ecosystem in nine districts’ service area. KVGB has jurisdiction over Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Bagalkot, Vijayapura, Belagavi, Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada districts.

The release said that Jai Kisan would procure a diverse range of clients for KVGB and enable end-to-end operations and facilitation of credit and other financial services for customers via its technology capabilities.
