Nearly 30% of young investors, aged between 18-30 years, are planning to invest more than usual this festive season, according to a survey by investment platform Groww.

Young investors were seen drawn towards stocks and mutual funds, witnessing the biggest spike at 87% and 58%, respectively, among other investment options like fixed deposits and foreign stocks, the survey added.

The survey was conducted with investors aged 18 and above to understand if the festive season impacts their investment decisions. Millions of young Indians have opted for stock trading during and post pandemic, raising hopes that the appetite for Indian equities is finally growing, the survey said.

Technology, including the rise of cheap trading apps and social media influencers has attracted hordes of day traders into the domestic markets.

Nearly 76% of the respondents are first-time investors, and 69% of respondents have been investing for less than a year. Seasoned investors who’ve been in the market for more than five years account for only 5.7%. Of the total survey respondents, Gen Z (18-24 years) and Gen Y (25-30 years) lead the chart as first-time investors, with 39% and 34% respectively, the survey has found.

The top two driving factors for investments were generating long-term wealth and general savings.

Retirement planning is one of the top investment priorities for investors aged 40 years and above, while 3% are considering to move their investments in the tax-savings asset class options this festive season, it added.

Out of the total respondents, 35% of investors aged between 31-40 years and 34% of investors aged between 25-30 years will plan to invest less than usual.

This is primarily because 45% of respondents are planning smaller purchases (shopping), while 19% plan to get their homes renovated and 18% are planning bigger purchases such as a car, gadgets and others.

Groww, itself, witnessed a 94.53% growth in the number of first-time investors in August, compared with the year ago period. Its investor base has grown rapidly and has already crossed over 15 million customers, indicating positive investment sentiment.

The number of registered investors on the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) crossed five crore on Monday. While the journey from three crore registered investors to four crore registered investors took about 15 months, the next one crore investor registrations took less than seven months, the leading bourse said in a statement.

Total number of unique client codes registered with the exchange stand at 8.86 crore (clients could register with more than one trading member). “The milestone achieved today is the culmination of efforts put in by the government, the regulators, and all stakeholders to provide a bouquet of products, simplified client onboarding processes, investor education and awareness,” Vikram Limaye, MD and CEO, NSE said.

“I am sure with the focused efforts of all stakeholders; we should be looking at increasing penetration further and touching the 10 crore unique investors mark over the next 3-4 years,” he added. Total demat accounts in the country held with the two depositories — CDSL and NSDL– are at around 7.02 crore which include multiple demat accounts held by a single investor having a unique PAN. An investor can have more than one demat account or trading account with different depository participants and trading members which are linked to a single PAN. North Indian states contributed 36 per cent of the new investor registrations on the NSE. Western states accounted for 31 per cent, followed by southern and eastern states at 20 per cent and 13 per cent, respectively.

State wise, Maharashtra contributed 17 per cent followed by Uttar Pradesh with 10 per cent and Gujarat with 7 per cent of the new investor registrations.

The top 10 states accounted for 71 per cent of the new investor registrations. The growth in investor registrations has largely been driven from non-metro cities. The cities beyond the top 50 cities accounted for 57 per cent of the new investor registrations, while the cities beyond the top 100 cities, contributed to 43 per cent indicating that the growing interest in the equity markets is not restricted to the metros and a few tier-I cities.

UCO Bank sees ‘improved investor appetite’

UCO Bank, which recently came out of the purview of the Reserve Bank’s Prompt Corrective Action, is expecting an “improved investor appetite”, which is likely to help its proposed capital raising plan.

The bank had recently received the board approval to raise close to ₹3,000 crore capital in 2021-22. The fundraise can take place through various modes, such as follow-on public offer, qualified institutional placement and preferential issue, subject to necessary approvals, it had said in a regulatory notification to stock exchanges.

According to Atul Kumar Goel, MD and CEO, UCO Bank, it would go for capital raising plans at an “opportune time”. “Earlier when we were in PCA there was less appetite from investors but now it is better. We have the board approval to raise around ₹3,000 crore and we will go for it when the market is right. We may look at QIP or preferential issue for raising funds,” Goel told BusinessLine.

As on June 30, 2021, the bank’s capital adequacy ratio stood at 14.24 per cent and CET-I ratio at 11.32 per cent.

PCA is triggered when banks breach certain regulatory requirements such as minimum capital, return on asset and quantum of non-performing asset.

The bank has been witnessing an improvement in profitability as well as asset quality.

Its net NPA reduced to 3.85 per cent (4.95 per cent) as on June 30.

Credit growth

The bank is expecting 8-10 per cent growth in advances during the current fiscal primarily on the back of a good demand from retail, MSME and agriculture sectors. During Q1FY22, the bank witnessed five per cent growth in advances at ₹1,20,849 crore as against ₹1,15,236 crore same period last year.

It has achieved 75 per cent of a targetted ₹2,500 crore loans by end September.

“We have seen a better response and demand for credit for housing loan and gold loan as compared to last year. There is also a demand from NBFC and infrastructure sectors. We are expecting 8-10 per cent growth in credit this year,” he said.

Loan restructure

UCO Bank, Goel said, has restructured loans to the tune of ₹2,500 crore upto June this year under RBI’s resolution framework 2.0.

Under the framework, banks and non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) can restructure loans of up to ₹50 crore.
