The pandemic has forced the brokerage industry to reassess all the business models and their respective go-to-market strategies, which is leading to either an extreme or a moderate disruption, said Bhawna Agarwal Country Head, India – Strategy & Growth, Enterprise Group, HPE India.

“One common theme across all business adoption or acceleration of digital is that it has become completely pervasive. So, all across the section of clients for us, especially the stock brokers, we’re adopting this fast digital way of interacting as well as investing,” she said at the panel discussion on Brokerages Fighting Disruption Digitally at ETBFSICXO

Rising expectations

Sandeep Bhardwaj, CEO, IIFL Securities feels that after using Netflix or Amazon, people don’t differentiate between a banking application or a broking application. “They feel like a broking apps should be like that. This is where it becomes challenging for any brokerage to bring that experience. UI, UX gives millennial users an experience of their taste,” he said.

The whole ecosystem we’re working on for catering to the needs of the new generation needs everything to be faster, quicker, better and simpler, said Jaideep Arora, CEO, Sharekhan.

“Our entire digital platform team has an average age of 26 years, so when they know for whom they are making a product, they end up creating the same scenario for them. So that is what we are trying to do to get that seamless experience,” Bhardwaj of IIFL Securities said.

A lot of data is being used to really understand how we give the right advice to the right customer in the best manner possible. So basically there’s a digital innovation happening in the account opening onboarding process, said Arora.

“Mixing behavioural science with the technology to leverage is what the entire solution is all about at the end of the day. How we create a user experience, leveraging AI and ML will define the user lifecycle throughout his life,” said Bhardwaj.

Collaboration with FinTechs

Digital is all about collaboration with FinTechs. Rather than building everything in-house and spending money, it’s all about collaborative work. So it becomes far easier to implement those solutions which are readily available, says Bhardwaj.

Having a very collaborative opensource and working with FinTechs and even smart customers and coming with a lot of solutions can help the whole system, and it will be a win-win across the industry, said Arora of Sharekhan.

“In this ecosystem, the learning is that you are not alone, you have to collaborate with FinTechs, you need to have rich API’s, engage with other partners and customers as well. You have to cover all aspects of digital transformation at all levels and really immerse into it, and then you truly grow. This is what our belief is,” he said.

Blockbuster week with Rs 14,000 crore mop-up in IPOs, BFSI News, ET BFSI

Mumbai: The IPO frenzy on Dalal Street continued with four offers together this week trying to mobilise about 14,600 crore, making it one of the busiest weeks for IPOs in several years. The previous week saw 3,614 crore, while during the week of July 12-16, 9,375 crore was raised from just one IPO — Zomato, data from exchanges and merchant bankers showed.

The previous large week for an IPO mobilisation was March 2-6, 2020 when SBI Cards raised 10,355 crore. A combination of easy availability of funds globally, a stock market that is recording a new peak on a regular basis and strong listing gains have combined to prompt promoters, merchant bankers and private equity investors to take companies public, industry players said. During the current week, Nuvoco Vista Corp is raising 5,000 crore through its IPO, which is the first such offer from a cement company in the last one and half decades. Nuvoco Vista is majority owned by Karsanbhai Patel who is also the owner of Nirma detergent. Its aim to raise 5,000 crore would make it the second-biggest IPO this year after Zomato’s. The last IPO of a cement company was launched in 2006 when JK Cement went public.

Nuvoco Vista is the fifth largest cement company in India and the biggest in eastern India. The shares are being offered at a price band of 560-570 per share. The IPO will close on August 11. According to a report by IIFL Securities, “given NVCL’s size, strong brand ownership, leadership position in the fast-growing eastern Indian market, availability of limestone mines for future expansion, and scope for improving profitability & deleveraging balance sheet, we believe valuations are reasonable. We recommend subscribing to the IPO.” Along with Nuvoco, three other IPOs are also open now. The IPO for CarTrade is for a tech-enable auto listing company while for Chemplast Sanmar, a speciality chemical company, it’s the second coming to be publicly listed after being delisted about 10 years ago. The IPO for Aptus Value Housing is for a mortgage finance company serving mid- and low-income segments.

IIFL Finance to raise up to ₹1,000 crore

IIFL Finance will open a public issue of bonds on March 3, 2021, to raise up to ₹1,000 crore. The issue will close on March 23.

The funds will be used for business growth and capital augmentation, it said in a statement on Friday, adding that the bonds offer up to 10.03 per cent yield.

The Fairfax and CDC Group-backed IIFL Finance will issue unsecured redeemable non-convertible debentures (NCDs), aggregating to ₹100 crore, with a green-shoe option to retain over-subscription up to ₹900 crore (amounting to a total of ₹1,000 crore).

Digital process transformation

Rajesh Rajak, CFO, IIFL Finance, said, “Through a physical presence of 2,500 branches across India and a well-diversified retail portfolio, IIFL Finance caters to the credit needs of under-served population. The funds raised will be used to meet credit needs of more such customers and accelerate our digital process transformation.”

The lead managers to the issue are Edelweiss Financial Services, IIFL Securities and Equirus Capital. The NCDs will be listed on the BSE and National Stock Exchange.
