HDFC Bank to tap into Equitas SFB’s customer base with co-branded credit card

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

In August, the lender had said it would recoup its share over the next three to four quarters.

HDFC Bank is looking to tap into the customer base of Chennai-headquartered Equitas Small Finance Bank (SFB) with two co-branded credit cards launched on Tuesday. The target is to issue the cards to 20% of Equitas SFB’s customer base over the next 12-18 months.

The two categories of cards on offer will be the Excite credit card, with a credit limit between Rs 25,000 and Rs 2 lakh, and the Elegance credit card, with a credit limit of over `2 lakh.

Murali Vaidyanathan, senior president and country head – branch banking liabilities, products & wealth – Equitas SFB, said close to five lakh customers will be eligible for the cards. “At a product penetration level, at least two in every 10 customers should have our co-branded card one year or 18 months from now — that is the approach within the qualified base with which we are moving forward. That means we are talking 20-25% penetration of the qualified base which incrementally gets added every month,” he said.

The underwriting for the co-branded cards will be done by HDFC Bank using the processes and algorithms it uses for its other customers. The outstanding amounts will also be reflected on HDFC Bank’s books.

Parag Rao, group head – payments, consumer finance, digital banking & IT, HDFC Bank, said the bank intends to address the under-penetration of electronic payment instruments in India and expand the market in association with Equitas SFB, whose roots lie in microfinance. “We’ve decided that competition and working with competition actually is a merit rather than a demerit and therein comes our strategy of partnerships with other banks,” Rao said.

He said, “Our job, beyond just looking at businesses at HDFC Bank, as market leader is to expand the market and we do believe partnerships and alliances wherein two like-minded entities come together for a co-created product to offer it to a certain set of customers will only deepen the market.”

HDFC Bank leads the credit card market in terms of the number of cards in force, with 1.5 crore cards outstanding at September-end as per data from the Reserve Bank of India. The bank’s incremental issuances took a hit between December 2020 and August 2021 due to a regulatory embargo on new credit card issuances during the period. Rival ICICI Bank took pole position in new issuances during the eight-month period. HDFC Bank is now working to claw its way back to the top. In August, the lender had said it would recoup its share over the next three to four quarters.

The co-branded cards will be issued by Visa. TR Ramachandran, group country head – India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, Visa, said credit card penetration in the country stands at about 6% in terms of the number of cards and only 3-4% in terms of individuals owning credit cards.

“There is a large nascent market for everyday digital payments more so on the credit side, because credit is also becoming a day-to-day feature rather than only for luxury and discretionary items, which means grocery, transport, everyday spends particularly —as the line between online and offline payments blurs,” Ramachandran said.

The cards will be issued through application programming interface (API) banking. As a result, there will be no data flow from Equitas SFB into the HDFC Bank system, Vaidyanathan said. “We will let the rule engine decide. We’ll pre-qualify accounts on first sight and then start selling it to our consumers,” he said.

Thereafter, based on Cibil ranking, Equitas will start identifying new-to-bank customers. “HDFC Bank handles only the card side of the issue and they will have the details relevant to the card with them and nothing from liabilities or transactions will be reflected or seen on that side,” Vaidyanathan said.

Equitas Small Finance Bank eyes 25% growth in advances this fiscal

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Equitas Small Finance Bank (Equitas SFB) is hopeful of clocking at least 25 per cent growth in its loan book from this fiscal, a top official said.

This is likely to happen provided there is no further disturbance in the coming days such as any third Covid wave, PN Vasudevan, Managing Director & CEO, Equitas SFB, told BusinessLine.

Equitas SFB’s advances growth target of 25 per cent is higher than the 17 per cent clocked during 2020-21, but lower than the pre-pandemic growth level of 35 per cent, he noted.

He highlighted there was no situation of any low-base effect playing out given that the Equitas SFB advances growth was 17 per cent last fiscal.

“I am assuming that if life returns to being reasonably normal, we should clock 25 per cent growth even this fiscal. Going forward we should be able to deliver annual credit growth of 25 per cent on a consistent basis,” Vasudevan said.

In the last five years since its formation, Equitas SFB balance sheet has grown from ₹9,000 crore to ₹25,000 crore. Advances have tripled to ₹18,000 crore from ₹6,000 crore. The number of branches doubled from 400 to about 850. “While the branches have doubled, the volumes have tripled,” Vasudevan said.

Equitas SFB, which has completed five years of existence, expects its non-performing assets to come down from 4.5 per cent last year (pandemic times) to normal level of 2.5-2.7 per cent over next 2-3 quarters. “We have never had an issue on the asset quality front in 14 years ( five years as a bank and about nine years as NBFC). We expect our NPA level to come back to absolutely normal level in next 2-3 quarters,” he said.

On capital raising to support growth, Vasudevan said that Equitas SFB is not projecting any capital requirement for next 2-3 years and is quite comfortable on this front.

On the proposed merger of its parent Equitas Holding with Equitas SFB, Vasudevan said that an application has been made to the RBI for the merger. “This proper merger of the holding company with SFB won’t have any impact on the operations of the bank as the holding company is a non-operating company,” he added.

Digital banking

Going forward, Equitas SFB intends to leverage digital to expand the customer base and would not go in for any large scale physical branch expansion. “This does not mean we will not set up new physical branches in the next few years. It will be a modest increase,” he noted.

He highlighted that the bank had opened 5.5 lakh new savings accounts in the first quarter this fiscal as against 4.8 lakh in the entire previous fiscal and this has been largely aided by the digital channel of the bank. In 2019-20, Equitas SFB had opened 1.6 lakh new savings bank accounts.

The bank said it has been offering this initiative by connecting APIs built by fintech infrastructure provider Setu for Equitas Bank.

In an industry-first, consumers can through the Google Pay app book high-interest rate FDs fully digitally, without needing to open a savings account with Equitas Bank on its spot integrated with the Google Pay platform, Equitas SFB said in a release.

The lender said that customers can earn returns of up to 6.35 per cent for an FD of one year, substantially higher than many other savings options.

As an RBI scheduled commercial bank, deposits in Equitas are covered by a deposit guarantee of up to Rs 5 lakh per depositor, it added.

To book an FD on Google Pay, the user will have to search for the Equitas Bank spot under the ‘Business and bills’ segment.

Further, they will have to select an amount and tenure for the fixed deposit, provide their personal and KYC (know your customer) details, and complete the payment using Google Pay UPI.

“On maturity, the proceeds will automatically go to the Google Pay user’s existing Google Pay linked bank account,” it said.

In case, a user wants to prematurely withdraw the deposit, the proceeds will reach their bank account as quickly as the same day, Equitas Bank said.

To begin with, the Equitas Bank fixed deposit facility will be available for Google Pay users on the Android app.

As the bank is all set to celebrate its 5th anniversary on September 5, 2021, this collaboration is a dedication to the digital world, it said.

“Equitas has been one of the early adopters of digital banking and Neo banking in particular. This programme provides a true digital FD booking experience; we have made efforts to ensure that the experience is as simple and seamless as possible.

Sahil Kini, CEO and Co-founder of Setu, said bank FDs are India’s favourite savings instrument and booking an FD should be as simple as making a UPI payment.

After reverse merger, promoter holding in Equitas, Ujjivan SFBs to fall to zero, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Taking a cue from IDBFC First Bank, Equitas Small Finance Bank and Ujjivan SFB plan to reverse merge the holding companies into the SFB, thereby bringing down the promoter shareholding to zero.

In case of Ujjivan SFB, promoter shareholding, or the shareholding by the non-operating holding comapbny was 83.32 per cent as in June 2021 while in the case of Equitas, the NOFHC held 81.98 per cent of the bank in March this year.

RBI rules stipulate that the SFB promoters must bring down their shareholding to 40 per cent in five years.
The reverse merger, in this case, brings down the promoter shareholding to zero as post merger, the holding companies would cease to exist.

Equitas SFB

As per the SFB licensing guidelines of RBI, a promoter of SFB can exit or to cease to be a promoter after the mandatory initial lock-in period of five years (initial promoter lock-in) depending on RBI’s regulatory and supervisory comfort and SEBI regulations at that time.

In case of Equitas Small Finance Bank (the bank), the initial promoter lock-in for the company expires on September 4, 2021.

Hence, the bank had requested RBI if a scheme of amalgamation of the company with the bank, resulting in exit of the promoter, can be submitted to RBI for approval, prior to the expiry of the said five years, to take effect after the initial promoter lock-in expires.

RBI vide its communication dated July 9, 2021, to the bank has permitted the bank to apply to RBI seeking approval for scheme of amalgamation.

RBI has also conveyed that any ‘no objection’, if and when given on the scheme of amalgamation, would be without prejudice to the powers of RBI to initiate action, if any, for violation of any licensing guidelines or any terms and conditions of license, or any other applicable instruction, it added.

The share exchange ratio would result into each shareholder of the transferor company, Equitas Holdings, getting 226 equity shares of the transferee company, Equitas SFB, for every 100 shares held by them in the holding company.

Holding company

The RBI had mandated a holding company structure to ring-fence the bank from other financial services businesses of the group. A reverse merger is beneficial to the shareholders of IDFC as it would remove the holding company discount. While the 2013 RBI rules mandated it, in the 2016 guidelines for “on-tap” bank licensing, the RBI had not sought requirement of holding company for promoter if there are no other group entities.
