New Delhi: Cybercriminals continued to exploit people’s screen habits formed during lockdown to spread scams and ransomware was the top threat for Indians in 2021, followed by crypto scams, a new report showed on Wednesday.

Cybersecurity researchers observed a 38 per cent increase in ransomware attacks targeting consumers globally, when comparing the last five months of 2021 to the first five months of the year, whereas for India, that number stands at 65 per cent.

On the mobile side, adware and fleeceware were among the top threats, according to global security company Avast.

“The pandemic has changed nearly every aspect of everyone’s lives, and that includes the cyberworld too,” said Michal Salat, director of threat intelligence at Avast.

“Attackers’ methods are becoming more sophisticated. Cybercriminals are using techniques that make them harder to spot and carrying out more personalised cyber attacks. They are also adding new spins on tried and tested techniques, especially in social engineering type of attacks like scams,” Salat added.

Businesses globally also experienced an increased number of attacks during the June-October period to the tune of 32 per cent.

However, for India, this number was less than the global average and stood at 19 per cent.

In general, phishing attacks continued to increase during 2021.

The chances of businesses encountering phishing scams has increased globally by 40 per cent in the last five months of the year but was much lower in India with 13 per cent.

“Consumers, too, continue to be targeted by phishing scams with the increase in global (24 per cent) and India (23 per cent) figures being nearly the same,” the report noted.

This year, a wide variety of new threats aimed at profiting from or mining cryptocurrencies at users’ expenses were reported.

Some of the main ones that impacted many countries around the world were Crackonosh, and BluStealer.

In addition to Crackonosh and BlueStealer, the researchers also found cryptocurrency-stealing malware that was distributed through HackBoss, a Telegram channel which, at the time of discovery, had stolen over $560,000 from victims.

In September, the researchers found more than 19,300 Android apps that potentially exposed user data due to an incorrect configuration of the Firebase database — an Android tool that developers can use with the purpose of storing user data.

This affected a wide range of different apps, including lifestyle, fitness, gaming, food delivery and mailing apps in regions around the world.

“Cybercriminals kept up many of their tricks this year, using social engineering to spread malware to get their hands on people’s money, abusing technology such as stalkerware to violate people’s privacy or deceiving vulnerable audiences into paying for fleeceware apps or unneeded tech support,” said Salat.

With emerging technologies changing the way we bank, cyber security has emerged as a key area of concern. Prof D Janakiram, director of Hyderabad-based Institute for Development and Research in Banking Technology (IDRBT) this year, speaks to Swati Rathor about the threats facing our banking systems and the work IDRBT is doing to beef up their security.

How can banks strengthen security infrastructure?

Banks have to be ahead of the hacker so, we are trying to create a change in the mindset of people managing these entities. For instance, many banks are innovating on AI/ML products by getting data from social media, where it is easy to manipulate data that leads to models being fed with wrong data. Hence, the whole system can be compromised. So, data integrity as well as security becomes a very critical part of the AI/ML system and that is an active research we are pursuing. The second thing we are trying to look at is how to reduce the impact of cyberattacks. For instance, if the digital transactions are on mobile platforms, one can use geo-fencing to reduce the chances of such attacks. Apart from this, cyber drills that we conduct regularly help banks spot vulnerabilities in their systems. We also have a threat intelligence platform that gathers information across banks and multiple sources and shares it with banks.

Which technologies will impact the financial inclusion mandate in future?

Technologies like 5G are likely to provide many opportunities as they will boost the number of internet users. When you add somebody to the financial system, that person would expect more facilities such as access to credit. Now, if you want to make credit accessible, one of the key things is the profile of the person, which means we collect data. Here the usage of the AI/ML models to be able to provide both, risk models as well as prediction models, will become necessary.

What new research areas is IDRBT focusing on?

We are focusing on next-generation digital financial infrastructure. The pandemic has made it imperative that we should have a next-generation video KYC platform. Currently there are many pain points for customers as every bank and financial services entity is trying to do its own video KYC. So, we are looking at a new platform, where, if the customer does a video KYC once, it will be available for other entities to verify. We would like to make this platform a part of the India Stack so that there is a quality enhancement in terms of the digital identity platforms.

But what about new age skills in the banking sector?

IDRBT is focusing on creating a cyber security skilled workforce because it is an extremely critical need. Besides, in the financial sector, skills pertaining to AI/ML and Cloud are also very important and we are working on that along with skilling on the 5G front.

Open banking

Open banking is a revolutionising technology that brings fintech and banking together and enables data exchange across institutions. The surge Bitcoin value has put focus on other revolutionary trends of the crypto world including decentralised Finance (Defi). It is a pool of financial applications based on crypto and blockchain technology and used worldwide across banking, insurance, and other financial services. Yield Farming, a part of Defi, offers its users to maximise returns by locking up their crypto assets and, in turn, earning interest, crypto coins and tokens. Another trend is Non-Fungible Tokens (NFT), which are digital assets that span both tangible and intangible assets like music, art, virtual real estate and even virtual sneakers. NTF data are unique and non-exchangeable, thus it ensures that users can verify the authenticity of these digital assets. There is Polkadot or blockchain of blockchains that enables blockchain networks to operate together seamlessly. It is a multi-chain ecosystem that allows you to move any type of data across any type of blockchain.

Banking-as-a-Service platforms

Banking-as-a-Service (BaaS) industry has attracted many players and is set to become a US$7.2 trillion industry by 2030. There are signs of serious BaaS momentum, with leading banks such as BBVA and JPMorgan Chase ramping up significant investment into the unique API-type models. Goldman Sachs has announced its own new BaaS portal for developers.

Focus on cybersecurity

There has been a rise in fraudulent activities during the Covid pandemic. Cybercriminals have heavily exploited the disruptions and attacked financial institutions. With the recently introduced Open Banking, there are more concerns about security, privacy, and fraud in banking and fintech. Open banking has magnified the impact of breaches and cybersecurity incidents as well. To fight financial crime, banks need to implement new security measures and diversify the ways our financial data are stored. To protect data, more companies are storing their data on on-premise and cloud platforms and implementing machine learning to identify all kinds of fraudulent activities across their network and platforms.

Anti-money laundering fight

The sixth AML Directive was introduced in European law last December, which sets out that all EU members and their organisations must implement these regulations by June 2021. The 6th AMLD aims to close the gap of domestic legislation and harmonise the definition of anti-money laundering across EU member states. The new directive also focuses on predicate crime as the list of financial crimes has been expanded covering a wider range of activities not listed in the previous directives.

Credit Suisse to hire 1,000 techies in India

Data sharing, cybersecurity and data protection have emerged as the top concern areas for the banks as well as customers, according to Deloitte‘s report on open banking. “About 70 per cent survey respondents feel that greater emphasis should be made towards data protection by institutions,” said the report ‘Open banking: Unleashing the power of data and seizing new opportunities’.

Deloitte said the insights in the paper are supported by extensive research, past work, and credentials, complemented by a survey to understand customer needs with 400 plus respondents across age groups and population codes.

The report further said more than 80 per cent of respondents are uncomfortable in sharing the transaction history of accounts, hinting towards a need for all financial institutions (FIs) to assure customers that their data is secure.

Observing that not only banks, but even customers are wary of data sharing, it said, “Cybersecurity and data protection are the top concern areas across all age groups, followed closely by wariness towards third-party access to data and transparency on data usage”.

Over the years, the value of data has reached unprecedented levels.

Countries, globally, are empowering customers with access to institutions of their choice, while jurisdictions are witnessing various approaches to open banking strategy and implementation based on regulatory favourability and industry maturity.

FIs, it said, also have realised that they are now custodians and not owners of data and are trying to move to alternative revenue streams after receiving customer consent. Sandeep Sonpatki, Partner, Deloitte India said the onset of the pandemic has given a boost to welcome digital and API based banking in India with most salaried respondents already being highly comfortable with digital banking.

“However, 69.3 per cent of respondents in our survey felt that greater emphasis should be placed on data protection by the institutions, which makes it very crucial for banks embarking on a journey to develop API-enabled products and services, to have a well-defined roadmap to produce demand-driven solutions and to remain ahead of the curve while maintaining the principles of customer-centricity, security, and trust,” he said.

The report further said access to data can be leveraged by FIs for lead generation, cross-selling products, risk assessment, pre and post delinquency management, collections strategy, and product development; potentially leading to significant business augmentation, asset quality improvement, operational efficiency, and cost optimisation.

Open banking, the report said, is perceived quite differently across jurisdictions. Some have gone ahead to create a regulator-driven, well-defined framework such as the UK and Australia; while others have followed a more market-driven approach such as India.

The bottom line, however, is providing customers control over sharing their information and servicing them through a targeted, data-driven approach, it added. Open banking also offers scope to increase customer onboarding at remote locations through quick, paperless documentation, verification, and alternate credit risk assessments.

With the onset of COVID-19 and the focus towards digitisation, the report said it believes the next 12-24 months will see a significant shift towards open banking amongst Indian FIs. Companies will invest in building core capabilities to address customers’ immediate needs.
