Online financial services sector fraud attempts dipped 15 per cent in the sector quarter as fraudsters in India are re-focusing their efforts from financial services to the travel and logistics industries according to a study by credit bureau Transunion Cibil.

Though the rate of suspected online financial services fraud attempts have still risen globally by 18.8% globally during April-June quarter over the same period a year ago, it declined in India by 15.35%, indicating stronger fraud control measures being adopted by the financial services industry, a release by the credit bureau said.

The rate of suspected digital fraud attempts on an aggregate rose 16.5% globally when comparing Q2 2021 to Q2 2020. But in India the percentage of digital fraud attempts decreased by 49.20% during the same time period.

The study notes that gaming and travel and leisure were the two most impacted industries globally for the suspected digital fraud attempt rate, rising 393.0% and 155.9% respectively in the last year. For transactions originating in India this rate rose 53.97% for gaming and 269.72%% for travel and leisure, the release said indicating a shift in industry[focus by fraudsters.

“It is quite common for fraudsters to shift their focus every few months from one industry to another,” said Shai Cohen, senior vice president of Global Fraud Solutions at TransUnion. “Fraudsters tend to seek out industries that may be seeing an immense growth in transactions. This quarter, as countries began to open up more from their COVID-19 lockdowns and travel and other leisure activities became more mainstream, fraudsters clearly made this industry a top target”.

The pandemic accelerated community – online dating and online retail transactions which require logistics and fraudsters have recognized this. “In India post the unlocks, travel and leisure has increasingly become a target as the industry recovers and fraudsters are looking to capitalize as more transactions return to this industry,” added Shai. “As fraudsters continue to target consumers, it’s incumbent on businesses to do all that they can to ensure their customers have an appropriate level of security to trust their transaction is safe all while having a friction-right experience to avoid shopping cart abandonment.”

ICICI Bank has announced that it has partnered with Amazon India to offer overdraft (OD) facility upto Rs 25 lakh to individual sellers and small businesses registered on the e-commerce company’s online marketplace, instantaneously and digitally. Driven by API integration, the partnership enables sellers to avail an OD from the Bank in a process, from application to sanction to disbursement, that is digital. Customers of other banks can avail the facility from ICICI Bank, if they are registered as sellers with amazon.in.

ICICI Bank has developed this new facility that functions on the back of an industry-first scorecard to evaluate credit worthiness of sellers based on their financial profile including Credit Bureau scores.

The new credit assessment method offers convenience to the sellers as it does away with the paper-intensive bank statements or income tax returns for assessing credit worthiness. Further, it empowers small businesses and individual sellers who are ‘new-to-credit’ and ‘existing MSME borrowers’ to unlock the value of their digital transactions and get access to instant credit.

In a statement, Pankaj Gadgil, Head- Self Employed Segment, SME & Merchant Ecosystem, ICICI Bank said, “This process will help the sellers, who may otherwise not get access to adequate credit when assessed in the traditional way of using only balance sheets, bank statements and tax returns. This new proposition resonates our effort in developing innovations for MSME customers and will empower them with new avenues of business expansion.”
Benefits of InstaOD:

  • Online loan application: Sellers registered on amazon.in can apply for the OD instantly online through amazon.in.
  • Easy process: The Bank evaluates sellers making the loan approval process easy and quick. This is an improvement over the typical process which demands sellers to go through the tedious paper-intensive process of submitting income tax returns, bank statements and GST returns.
  • Instant sanction and disbursal: The approved OD amount is instantly sanctioned and disbursed into the seller’s current account
  • Pay for what you use: Sellers only need to pay interest on the amount of OD utilised by them
  • Auto-renewal facility: The OD is renewable on an annual basis, depending on the repayment track records of the seller

“We are prioritizing our efforts to help sellers on amazon.in bounce back from the disruption owing to COVID-19. We want to enable easy access to credit for sellers with transparent policies and at low costs” said Vikas Bansal, Director – Amazon Pay India, in a statement.

How to improve your credit score post-pandemic

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

When any adversity hits, we as human beings put our rational thought process on the back-burner and err. If these decisions are linked to financial matters, then the cost multiplies, snowballing beyond one’s control.

When the pandemic struck, the behaviour was no different. Loss of job or paycuts, bulky medical expenses – borrowers were forced to cut corners. Loan and card bills suffered, impacting the credit score.

As green shoots emerge, it is an opportune time to reflect on the financial faults and correct the past mistakes such that your credit score gets a fillip.

The Reserve Bank of India’s moratorium gave respite to borrowers for the period between March 1, 2020 to August 31, 2020, while ensuring that the moratorium seekers’ credit report is not affected.

However, there could be other aspects such as credit utilisation and monthly repayment obligations which need your attention now.

A good credit score not just brightens the prospects of getting a loan, but also determines the rate at which the loan is given. If another catastrophe strikes, a high credit score acts like a shield to guard you from a credit crunch.

Start with the basic step of sourcing a copy of your credit report from either of the credit bureaus. Note that every credit bureau offers the borrower a free credit report once a year.

Pay up costly loans

To make ends meet during the pandemic if you went all out seeking loans, especially withdrawing cash using credit cards, then that should be your first rectification step. Cash on credit card is the costliest loan and any surplus that you have, should be used to pay that at the first instance.

Next on your radar should be to shorten the list of loans, trimming them based on the interest rate you pay – the highest rate loan paid out first. Fewer loans mean better focus at handling debt, which augments your credit score.

Continue older loan/ credit card

To shorten the list of loans, do not consider closing the older loans or credit cards first. With the older loans and credit cards there is credit history, and this can positively impact your credit score.

Restructure loans

If you are struggling with your loan repayment as the pandemic left you without a job even six months later, then sit across the table with your bank and renegotiate the payment terms, interest rate or EMI amount, such that it is easier for you to pay. Such restructuring of loan enables you to make timely repayment on your terms, ensuring your credit score is not affected due to loan defaults.

Minimise credit utilisation

Using up 100 per cent of your credit card or overdraft limit indicates your inability at handling money. Bankers fix their gaze on what is referred to as ‘credit utilisation’ or the amount of free credit limit available on your cards. Instead of using up 90 per cent of your credit limit on one credit card, it makes immense sense to have three cards with 30 per cent credit limit consumed. This simple but critical step aids to your credit score as only a small portion of the available credit limit has been used.

Lastly, treat these credit sanitisation practices like hygiene. Difficult to establish, but once inculcated, they feel like second nature.
