Apart from weekly offs, banks will remain shut in different states on account of different holidays. Banks will not be closed for all 21 days for all states as these are state-specific holidays for different occasions. On October 2, banks across the country will remain shut as it will be a gazetted holiday. The Reserve Bank of India has categorised holidays under three categories — Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday; and Banks’ Closing of Accounts. The list of holidays given below has been notified by RBI.

Banks across Gangtok will remain closed on 1 October 2021, on account of half-yearly closing of bank accounts. On 6 October 2021, only banks Agartala, Bengaluru, and Kolkata will remain shut to observe Mahalaya Amavasye. Only banks in Imphal will observe a holiday on 7 October 2021, on account of Mera Chaoren Houba of Lainingthou Sanamahi. On 12 October 2021, banks in Agartala and Kolkata will remain shut due to Durga Puja (Maha Saptami). On the next day, banks in Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Kolkata, Patna, and Ranchi will observe a holiday on account of Durga Puja (Maha Ashtami). On 14 October, banks across Agartala, Bengaluru, Chennai, Gangtok, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Patna, Ranchi, Shillong, and Thiruvananthapuram will be closed for Durga Puja/Dussehra (Maha Navami)/Ayutha Pooja.

On 15 October 2021, except for Imphal and Shimal, banks across the country will remain closed for Durga Puja/Dasara/Dusshera (Vijaya Dashmi). Only banks in Gangtok will remain closed on 16 October to observe Durga Puja (Dasain). On 18 October, banks in Guwahati will be closed; on 19 October, banks in Ahmedabad, Belapur, Bhopal, Chennai, Dehradun, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Kanpur, Kochi, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Raipur, Ranchi, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram will remain shut for Id-E-Milad/Eid-e-Miladunnabi/Milad-i-Sherif. Banks in Agartala, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Shimla, will be closed on 20 October for Maharishi Valmiki’s Birthday. On 22 and 26 October, banks in Jammu and Srinagar will remain closed for Eid-i-Milad-ul-Nabi, and Accession Day, respectively.

Banks in most states will observe a holiday on 10 September 2021, on account of Ganesh Chaturthi/Samvatsari. Since there are state-specific holidays for different occasions, banks will not be shut for all six days for all states in September 2021. Also, 11 September’s leave overlaps with the second Saturday. The Reserve Bank of India has categorised holidays under three categories — Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act; Holiday under Negotiable Instruments Act and Real-Time Gross Settlement Holiday; and Banks’ Closing of Accounts. Only banks in Imphal will observe a holiday on 13 August 2021 due to Patriot’s Day. Banks across Belapur, Mumbai, and Nagpur will remain closed on 16 August 2021 on account of Parse New Year (Shahenshahi). Banks in most of the states will remain shut on 19 August 2021, except in Aizwal, Bengaluru, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Guwahati, Imphal, Kochi, Panaji, Shillong, Shimla and Thiruvananthapuram. On 20th August, banks in Bengaluru, Chennai, Kochi, and Thiruvananthapuram will observe a holiday on account of Muharram/First Onam.

Only banks in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will remain shut on 21st and 23rd August 2021, on account of Thiruvonam and Sree Narayana Guru Jayanthi, respectively. Janmashtami celebrated on 30 August 2021 will also be a bank holiday in Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Chennai, Dehradun, Gangtok, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Lucknow, Patna, Raipur, Ranchi, Shillong, Shimla, and Srinagar. Only Hyderabad will oberve a bank holiday on 31 August 2021 due to Sri Krishna Ashtami.

Banks in Agartala and Shillong will observe a holiday on July 17 because of U Tirot Sing Day/Kharchi Puja. Only banks in Gangtok will remain closed on July 19 on account of Guru Rimpoche’s Thungkar Tshechu. On July 20, 2021, banks in Jammu, Srinagar, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram will observe a holiday. On account of Id-Ul-Zuha, banks in most of the states across the country will remain shut on July 21, except in Aizawl, Bhubaneswar, Gangtok, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram.

Banks in India will remain closed for over 10 days in April 2021, including weekends and festivals. In the first four days of April, banks will remain shut for three days due to the closing of accounts on April 1, Good Friday on April 2, and Sunday on April 4. Apart from these 10 holidays, there are five more state-specific and region-specific holidays. It may be noted that only gazetted holidays are observed by banks all over the country. While planning bank-related work, people are advised to check the holiday date in their respective states. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), most states will observe holidays on Good Friday, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Jayanti and Ram Navami. The list of holidays given below has been notified by RBI under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), banks will remain operational on April 1, 2021, in Aizawl and Shillong. Also, banks across Agartala, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Jaipur, Jammu, Shimla, and Srinagar will not observe holiday on April 2, 2021. On April 14, 2021, banks in states such as Aizawl, Bhopal, Chandigarh, New Delhi, Raipur, Shillong and Shimla will remain functional. Similarly, on Ram Navmi, banks in Aizawl, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Imphal, Jammu, Kochi, Kolkata, New Delhi, Panaji, Raipur, Shilong, Srinagar and Thiruvananthapuram will remain open.

Only Hyderabad will observe a bank holiday on April 5, 2021, on account of the birthday of Babu Jagjivan Ram. While on April 6, 2021, only Chennai will observe a bank holiday due to the assembly poll election in Tamil Nadu. Similarly, banks in Guwahati will remain shut for Bohag Bihu. Only banks in states such as Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji and Srinagar, will observe a holiday on April 13, 2021. Similarly, on April 15, banks in only five states — Agartala, Guwahati, Kolkata, Ranchi and Shimla will remain closed.

The government is in hurry to give the corporate houses an edge over the existing players.

In January 2021, banks in India will remain closed for 14 days, including four Sundays along with second and fourth Saturdays, and one national holiday. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), these holidays may differ from state to state and be different in various banks. Customers are advised to plan their bank-related work accordingly, in order to avoid any last-minute trouble. While banks will remain closed on these days, mobile and internet banking will remain functional. As for the year 2021, banks across India will remain shut for more than 40 days. It may be noted that the dates given below were informed by RBI under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

Banks in Chennai and Guwahati will remain shut on January 15, 2021, for Thiruvalluvar Day or Magh Bihu and Tusu Puja. Only Agartala will observe a bank holiday on January 23, 2021, on account of the birthday of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. While on January 25, 2021, only Imphal will observe a bank holiday due to Imoinu Iratpa. Further, for the first quarter of the year 2021 (January-March), banks will be closed for 19 holidays, other than Sundays and 2nd and 4th Saturdays.
