Coverfox reduces monthly net burn by half between April 2020 to March 2021

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

After the resignation of Coverfox’s CEO and CTO in early 2020, Sanjib Jha, CEO of Coverfox claims to have reduced the company’s monthly net burn by half from April 2020 to March 2021.

Jha attributed this shift to the company’s increased focus on digital automation. Coverfox started off as a pure call centre selling insurance products assisting the customers to purchase the insurance products. But today, it has pivoted from a call centre heavy burn model to an e-commerce model which is said to have brought over 6x efficiency to the company’s operations.

“We have implemented strategies like a lead scoring system using data analytics to optimise the performance of our call centre and shift to a fully digital journey along with the launch of our B2C mobile application. The use of data and advanced analytics has helped to create a bridge between the behavioural characteristics of customers and their spending habits in insurance buying products, providing a true fodder for machine learning models,” Jha told BusinessLine.

The company’s new B2C app currently has 100K installs and has contributed to an upwards of 1 crore of business in the four months of its launch. He added that, for decades, insurance has been sold as a push product by agents in India. There has been less product knowledge, no transparency, and no proper claim management system.

To address this, Coverfox increased effort on the product side to move to a fully digital sales model which minimises call centre effort. Be it chatbots, Artificial Intelligence (AI) based voice bots, Machine Learning based document scanning, end to end digital flows, lead scoring etc.

Coverfox.com currently has over 3 million monthly visits and plans to expand its catalogue soon to serve a broader audience in need of digital insurance products, particularly bite-sized ones. The company’s services include motor vehicles (both personal and commercial vehicles such as taxi and GCV), health, term life, as focused insurance products.

Revenue and profit

Commenting on the company’s revenue number and profitability, Jha said “We are in structural space and can state that the company is on sound footing now and has achieved gross margin profitability on retail product lines – motor, health and term insurance products.

We have been able to maintain positive gross margins since January 2021, owing to our continuous efforts in optimizing the operations and becoming a customer-focused insurtech.”

Coverfox used to be a prominent player in the insurtech space and had raised capital from marquee investors such as Narayana Murthy’s Catamaran Ventures, SAIF partners, and Accel among others. Coverfox’s direct competitor, PolicyBazaar has recently got the SEBI’s approval for a ₹6,017 Cr IPO and may raise around ₹750 crore through a private placement of equity shares.

South Korea bans Google and Apple payment monopolies, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

SEOUL: South Korea’s National Assembly approved legislation on Tuesday that bans app store operators such as Google and Apple from forcing developers to use their inapp payment systems. South Korea is reportedly the first country in the world to pass such a bill, which becomes law when it is signed by the president, whose party has backed the legislation.

The tech giants have faced widespread criticism over their practice of requiring app developers to use in-app purchasing systems, for which the companies receive commissions of up to 30%. They say the commissions help pay for the cost of maintaining the app markets. The legislation prohibits the app market operators from using their monopolies to require such payment systems, which means they must allow alternative ways to pay.

It says the ban is aimed at promoting fairer competition. The bill aims to prevent any retaliation against developers by banning the companies from imposing any unreasonable delay in approving apps. The legislation also allows authorities to investigate the operations of app markets to uncover disputes and prevent actions that undermine fair competition.

Regulators in Europe, China and some other markets worry about the dominance of Apple, Google and other industry leaders in payments, online advertising and other fields. Chinese regulators have fined some companies for antimonopoly violations, while other governments are wrestling with how best to keep markets competitive. The Korea Internet Corporations Association, an industry lobby group that includes South Korea’s largest internet companies, welcomed the passage of the bill, which it said would create healthier competition.

Google said it is considering how to comply with the legislation. “Google Play provides far more than payment processing, and our service fee helps keep Android free, giving developers the tools and global platform to access billions of consumers around the world,” it said in a statement. Apple responded to an email reiterating a statement issued last week. “We believe user trust in App Store purchases will decrease as a result of this proposal — leading to fewer opportunities for the over 482,000 registered developers in Korea who have earned more than KRW8.55 trillion to date with Apple.”

Need for secure digital payments and nearby access to banking during COVID-induced lockdowns fuelled the growth momentum of Airtel Payments Bank, which turned profitable for the first time in July, according to a top company official. In a communication to the employees, Airtel Payments Bank Chief Executive Officer Anubrata Biswas has said over the last four years, the bank has grown rapidly, doubling every 18 months.

“Today, the bank is a significant player in the financial and digital inclusion ecosystem of the country,” Biswas said.

He said that the bank has turned profitable for the first time in its history, and termed it a “cherished milestone” in the 55th month of operations.

He, however, did not mention the financial details.

The onset of the pandemic in early 2020 resulted in a “very challenging period” for the country, Biswas recalled.

“It was equally challenging for us as a team. Yet, we have been relentless, focused, indeed unstoppable. The momentum gained from people’s need for secure digital payments, and neighbourhood access to banking during lockdowns, gave us an opportunity to accelerate in a very cost-effective way,” he said in the recent outreach to employees.

Recently, Bharti Airtel Chief Executive Officer Gopal Vittal, during the telco’s post-earnings call had said that Airtel Payments Bank currently has a monthly transacting user base of close to 30 million users, an annualised GMV of over Rs 1,00,000 crores, and a merchant base of over seven million.

“I am also pleased that Airtel Payments Bank is now on the verge of hitting a 1000 crore annualised revenue run rate and has broken even in the month of July,” Vittal had said.

He had also highlighted that Airtel Payments bank is being fully integrated into all Airtel digital channels, both consumer app as well as retailer app making it one of the few companies that can collect cash for any service at the point of sale, online and offline.

Google updates policy for personal loan apps; adds new norms for India, Indonesia

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

Google has updated its financial services policy for developers to include clarifications related to personal loan apps, as also new requirements for such apps in India and Indonesia.

“We’re updating the Financial Services policy to clarify the definition of the total cost of the loan and require all personal loan apps be properly tagged under the Finance category. We are also adding new requirements for personal loan apps in India and Indonesia,” Google said on its support page.

The changes will be effective from September 15, 2021.

As per the policy, “Apps that provide personal loans, including but not limited to apps which offer loans directly, lead generators, and those who connect consumers with third-party lenders, must have the App Category set to “Finance” in Play Console.”

The apps will have to disclose a range of information in the app metadata including minimum and maximum period for repayment, the maximum annual percentage rate (APR), which generally includes interest rate plus fees and other costs for a year, or other similar rate consistent with local law.

“A representative example of the total cost of the loan, including the principal and all applicable fees,” explains the policy.

The apps will also be required to include a privacy policy that “comprehensively discloses the access, collection, use and sharing of personal and sensitive user data”.

Google publishes first transparency report in accordance with the new IT Rules

Google also specified additional requirements for personal loan apps in India and Indonesia. Apps must complete the additional proof of eligibility requirements in these countries.

In India, such apps will have to complete the personal loan app declaration, and provide documentation to support their declaration. For instance, for platforms licensed by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to provide personal loans, they must submit a copy of their licence for review.

RBI received complaints against over 1,500 loan apps: Thakur

Platforms not directly engaged in moneylending, and only facilitating lending by registered non-banking financial companies (NBFCs) or banks, will have to accurately reflect this in the declaration.

They must also ensure that the developer account name reflects the name of the associated registered business name provided through their declaration.

Google in January this year had reviewed hundreds of personal loan apps in India and removed those that violated its policies.

The tech giant’s crackdown comes a day after the RBI announced that it has set up a working group to study all aspects of digital lending activities by both regulated and unregulated players, in a bid to put in place an appropriate regulatory approach.

HDFC Bank says working with RBI for restarting banned services, BFSI News, ET BFSI

[ad_1]

Read More/Less

MUMBAI: HDFC Bank on Thursday said network outages that led to a regulatory ban on new credit card sales were not due to transaction volumes and affirmed that it continues to stay in touch with the RBI for restarting the services but giving a timeline for it will be difficult.

The bank said it is on its way to creating a new technology architecture for the future as part of the “digital factory” and “enterprise factory” initiatives. But, it conceded that outages will continue under the older system though it will be working to minimise the time taken to bring the service back.

In December 2020, the RBI took the unprecedented step of stopping the largest private sector lender from selling any new credit cards and also launching new digital services, because of a series of network outages.

The outages, however, continued even after the action, the last of which was witnessed on Tuesday when the mobile banking app stopped working for 90 minutes.

In a specially arranged interaction to address concerns around technology, its Chief Information Officer, Ramesh Lakshminarayanan said there have been a series of actions, including the visit of an external audit team, to assess its capabilities and also submission of the audit report.

“We are awaiting further directions from the regulator in this matter. We are fully prepared, we have shared all of the required information.

“We are awaiting further guidance from the regulator in terms of seeing how this will pan out now. I don’t have the timelines now, I can’t second guess,” he said.

The bank is also working very closely with the regulator and the industry in terms of ensuring that “some of the outages we saw, we continue to address them in a fruitful way”.

It had embarked on an initiative to upgrade its technology over 15 months ago, even before the RBI action came in, he said adding that it is carrying out the job of making the existing systems work seamlessly and building new systems simultaneously at present.

He said two years from end-2021 will witness a series of new services launches and improvisations, but declined to give an exact timeline by which the work on the newer technology platform will be finished.

“I don’t think we will be able to stop all the outages from the existing side, we will try and minimise.

“There will be incidents and should an incident come up, we will react to it faster and keep alternative channels open, communicate effectively,” he said.

The bank has increased the hiring of talent and aims to add up to 500 new employees to the technology team over the next two years.

Lakshminarayanan, who joined the bank seven months ago, said it is hiring from across the spectrum like financial technology players and large technology companies, and not just from banks.

As part of the transformation, it is working with big cloud services providers, entrenched fintech, and also niche start-ups, he said declining to name any of the vendors.

He made it clear that the bank has always been at par with peers when it comes to spends on technology but declined to share the investments which are now going in. The bank’s spends on technology will be at par with global benchmarks now, he said.

Going into the reasons for the past failures, Lakshminarayanan said none of the troubles were due to high volumes and hinted that the large and complex legacy technology systems may have some issues.

“The existing technology landscape is complex, large and we process a record number of transaction volumes.

“None of these issues that came out have been on account of capacity. We have had issues like a hardware failure, sometimes some components would not have worked effectively,” he said.

He added that none of the outages have been repeating ones, pointing out that some newer challenge has come up every time. The top officer for IT systems also declined to answer a question on the reasons why other banks that carry out similar transactions have not reported similar incidents.

Addressing analysts last month, the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Shashidhar Jagdishan had called the incidents and the regulatory action as a “blot” on the reputation of the lender.

“In the case of HDFC Bank, there were earlier episodes also. HDFC Bank has an overwhelming presence in the digital payment segment, in the internet banking segment.

“We have some concerns about certain deficiencies etc. It is necessary that HDFC Bank strengthens its IT (information technology) systems before expanding further,” RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das said earlier this year.

“We cannot have thousands and lakhs of customers who are using digital banking to be in any kind of difficulty for hours together and especially when we are ourselves giving so much emphasis on digital banking.

“Public confidence in digital banking has to be maintained,” Das said.

Jagdishan had said it has taken the right lessons from the regulatory interventions.

“The fundamental part where we could probably have done better is resiliency and how do you recover faster when an outage happens,” he told analysts last month.

Lakshminarayanan on Thursday admitted that HDFC Bank has not been the “gold standard” company and added that the benchmark which is now being chased is to see happy customers.
